150 Gallon Build Thread ... From the Start

Just for grins when I go up to the LFS this week I am also going to price the tank, stand, and canopy for the 180 (wonder if they can change the title of this thread - lol). The extra 6 inches from front to back would give us much more room to work when scaping this baby!! I don't think anything else would have to change - lighting, filters, etc.

next on list..
glass diffuser/drop checker
a pair of long scissors and curve tip tweezers
possible powerhead if needed..
options on stock..

Diffuser is an easy pickup. Have to double-bubble drop checker on the shelf.

Also need to order a Milwaukee controller.

Have both the long scissors (curved also - BTW) and curve tip tweezers.

No powerhead (can't stand them - lol). The 3 2217s should move enough water.

Stock - in addition to the clean up crew, will be adding a school of rummies and cardinals (starters for each are in the 45). Will likely add discus also. Brings up a good question - should I start with the water at 82 - 84 if planning on adding discus, or raise it up just before adding them? Also, what's a good number of discus. Earlier in this thread someone suggested adult discus only???

Vader,

With the fluorescents mounted on a sliding rail, I positioned the moonlights toward the back. They don't interfere at all, as far as I can see. The night effect is just great.

not sure on temperature but go for Pop's discus.. he has them on sale right now.. And i believe they suggest adults for a planted tanks because younger ones need more maintenance and are more sensitive. As for a number i would go for 5-6. Now another thing is choosing species.. Whether you want to keep it all one color or mix it up with reds and blues and what not.. Im no discus expert so im sure someone else will fill you in on this.

Just got back from the LFS and talked with Matt (he is following and has posted to this thread). Thanks again for all your assistance Matt! Really some great input regarding plants, etc.!

They have EcoComplete - way expensive. Matt said it breaks down in about 2 years. Whereas, Flourite won't (what I have in my 45). Any input?!?

Also, they don't carry any black gravel, per say. Just the dreaded river gravel (lol)! Any ideas??

Since I am going to paint the spray bars black, I am thinking of just replacing the green Eheim tubing with black. I have to order additional tubing anyway - what comes with the 2217s won't begin to reach. Question (again): The extra distance won't cut down on the filters' performance will it??

And finally, Marcie (owner) is out today. I will need to go back up on Tuesday or Wednesday to discuss final price on tank, stand, and canopy. That will give me a couple of days to further research GlassCages.com and what they may have to offer.

Thanks for the feedback Vader - glad to see you back! It's getting better all the time. Just came from the LFS - they had the 150 tall with an oak stand and canopy. Looks sweeeeet but the cherry looks even better!!

Glasscages.com have some cool tank sizes - but their stands just don't look like the cherry Mission Series you have. Also, I am nowhere near their delivery zone - would have to pay direct shipping (likely to be an arm and a leg)!

The Glasscages stands and canopies are unfinished. I intend to stain mine a cherry color. I am sure I can achieve a great result. Anyway, as I said before, this is not for everyone and there is nothing wrong with buying a stand/canopy that's finished how you want it.

As for the longer hose length required for the 2217, the flow appears quite strong and is equivalent to the flow coming from the 2208.

Could you point me towards these??

Yes, I remember now that adults are easier to keep. Young can even use glass bottoms, etc.

Also, we really seem to be partial to the reds and blues (from what we have seen).

Any discus keepers please feel free to offer feedback - thanks!

you can mix different strains of discus no problem as long as they are all the same size..no matter what with discus, there is always a distinct pecking order..and always a runt of the group. its just the way it goes with them.

in a 150/180 you could do 10 comfortably.

10-15 gallons per discus is the general rule that seems to work well.

However, I would caution against juveniles in a planted tank.

this does not seem to work well - they do not seem to grow as well and can be stunted. I didn't believe it until I tried it. 65 gallons with amazing plants, and 6 stunted discus...

however, when I had them barebottom after doing research, they grew all the way up to adult size..

check out simplydiscus.com for more info on this..

its not as simple as just changing water more often..juvenile discus are difficult to grow to adulthood in a fully planted tank..presumably from decaying plant matter, dirt buildup around plant roots etc. leading to compromised water quality that you just do not get in non planted tanks..
