150 Gallon Build Thread ... From the Start

The Glasscages stands and canopies are unfinished. I intend to stain mine a cherry color. I am sure I can achieve a great result. Anyway, as I said before, this is not for everyone and there is nothing wrong with buying a stand/canopy that's finished how you want it.

As for the longer hose length required for the 2217, the flow appears quite strong and is equivalent to the flow coming from the 2208.

I'm sure roadracr that the cherry finish you put on your stand and canopy will look great. Although it's not out of the question for me to finish them myself (I kind of like the idea, in fact) - just not sure if I would be able to achieve the same kind of results you could - not sure I would be happy with my outcome! I really like their tank sizes. I seem to be, however, way off their "drop zone" and shipping would be a consideration.

Thanks for the feedback on the longer hose and the 2217s - looks like those are a go then!! I checked at the LFS today and I can get the hose in black - will match the painted spray bars and should blend in nicely with the background.

you could have the cardinals/rummy's in at 80 degrees, for however long, then slowly raise it up to 84 for the discus then add them. they should be fine.

however, be warned that if you are doing a fish-IN cycle, these guys are not hardy enough for it.

last time I set up a discus tank, I did a fish IN cycle with friendly hardy gouramis (moonlights, dwarfs and pearls).

but most prefer a fishless cycle, using household ammonia..no fish until the cycle is complete.

We planned on adding the discus 3 or 4 months in - well after the cycle is complete - would that be cool??

......
its not as simple as just changing water more often..juvenile discus are difficult to grow to adulthood in a fully planted tank..presumably from decaying plant matter, dirt buildup around plant roots etc. leading to compromised water quality that you just do not get in non planted tanks..

Huh.... that's really interesting. There's my new info. for the day.

yeah, its hard to believe.

I have had 3 discus tanks over the years.

first one, non planted - fish grew like crazy to adult hood.

second one, fully planted (big swords, val etc) fish stunted.

read about this phenomenon on simply discus.

next tank non planted, fish grew like crazy again up to adults.

made a believer out of me.

if you spend some time on simplydiscus, you will see that most there keep barebottom tanks, grow their fish up to semi-adults and THEN move them into their planted show tanks.

the stunting phenomenon in planted setups is why.

I learned that one the hard way...
