150 Gallon Build Thread ... From the Start

I figure that mixing black gravel with black flourite will end up saving between $110 and $150. Is it worth it and will I ever be able to tell the difference?? The more I read (not just Seachem's site pushing the product - but other boards) the more encouragement I see towards 100% black flourite.

this is totally up to you.. Plants will grow GREAT in any substrate be it even marbles lol.. The fancy substrate gives the plants an extra kick/dose of nutrients when they are just planted.. after that its dosing NPK + traces to balance things out..

I saw that, but also read a review from a guy on another board who said it was actually a little grayish - not jet black.

even so as long as its dark it will look good.. though this is what it seems to be right now.. not really about plant nutrients in the substrate but all about looks.. well this extra look is costing you $150+

Big Al's delivered (16 bags):

Subtotal: $ 255.84 USD Shipping: $ 212.80 USD Total: $ 468.64 USD

Drs was around $370 to the house and AquaCave.com was a little over $380.

final cost with gravel ($13 per 20lb bag locally) + flourite 50/50 mix.. atleast 1/3 of that lol

I was afraid that was what your response would be BK (lol). It's a good thing there are only a thousand decisions to make here instead of 2 or 3 thousand (lol).

I may just draw out of a hat on this one. I do, however, like your idea of throwing a little of each in the corner and seeing what it looks like!

16 bags?? what are the measurements of the tank again?? 72" x 18" ??

Will likely be 72 x 24 - why in the **** go to all this trouble (I mean fun) for a tank that is only 18 inches (lol)? After all, you said it yourself - the 55 is tough to move around in. I will be fighting the tall tank / stand to start with - don't need the 18 inches in my way too.

Besides the extra cost, I can't see the downside of a 180 - the lights and filters should be the same. Just a little concerned about the tank, stand, and canopy. Will be going to the LFS either tomorrow or Wednesday to price it out and decide.
