even so i end up getting 12 bags per the substrate calculator
(for 3" you need 180lbs of flourite/15.4 = 11.### round it off to 12) Maybe im wrong and i need to go to bed? lol
Though i understand you want to start everything right from the start.. but some things can be left simple. Remember you still got alot of spending left to do. co2 tank, plants, and more more more

Thanks - simple is good. The "best" is obviously a good path - but it seems that there are certainly areas where the best isn't premier on the importance meter. The 50/50 substrate mix is a perfect example. That's why this thread is so important - saving $$$ - both on setup and over the long run.
Planning to order the lights later this week. Really excited to get to the LFS and get the tank, stand, and canopy on the way - either tomorrow or the next day (it would be great if it wasn't 60 miles away - lol)!

The real question is Marcie going with the 180? The extra 6 inches of depth only makes sense - just hope the stand and canopy don't go through the roof. If it's pretty close in price, I think the 180 is a no-brainer!

No 300 here - this is "all" the fun I ever want to have (lol)!!
The appealing part of the 180 is the lights and filters will work (not to mention the extra room to move and the added depth that should open up a few more scaping options).
