150g Mbuna - Build Thread

great stuff - thanks for showing us the start & keep us posted as you go please :)

This is going to be a nice tank! Any plans for extras? special lighting, UGJ, 3D background, etc? I came across this 3D background today Cave "Grotto" & HERE is a link to someone else that did it. I am considering it for my tank. I really like the idea that it is functional as actually caves & hides all the equipment.

Keep us posted! :thm:

A great start! Thanks!

It's about time for an update. This past week or so we've been pre-occupied but we finally had some time to pick up more wood and work on the stand this weekend.

We added the additional 2x4s and then finished the stand. We also built our first canopy.

Then we stained the stand and canopy today and we're waiting for it to dry.

The front panel of the stand is removable and attached with velcro.

The canopy.

Rear of the canopy. The holes are for plugs and canister tubes. The square cut out is where an Aquaclear 110 will go.

This is the first canopy we've built... because we bought thin plywood we had to attach the hinge on top of the canopy and the sides of the lid come up a little. We'll probably add a couple strips of velcro on both corners to keep the corners down.

This is the first time we tried staining wood. Having to worry about what wood we use and which way the grain faces is relatively new to us (and kind of a pain!). We're anxiously waiting for the wood stain to fully dry and see what the final color and finish looks like. We figure if it turns out bad we can just paint it black. :lol2: :shakehead:

Let us know what you guys think, good or bad. :)

sweet so far, wow i am anxious to see how it turns out now, at any rate good job..

Wow, everything is looking great! Keep the good work!

We put a second coat of stain on last night. It darkened the wood a little and it looks more even now, looks a lot better IMHO. Just got back from putting a coat of polyurethane on. Now we wait 24 hours for it to dry and bring the stand and canopy in tomorrow. But we're going to bring the fish tank in today. Wish us luck, the tank's pretty heavy! I'll post pictures a little later. :)
