1st post.....and my new tank!!

They could rot. Just keep an eye on them. Won't be hard with sweet looking tank!;)

Yeah... just because an aquatics store sells them doesn't mean they know their butt from their elbow when it comes to fully submersible versus partially sumbersible versus bog plants.

For instance, they were selling mare's tail and some other plant at Lowe's here in town as an oxygenating plant, but they had it completely out of water. They were selling their water lilies this way as well. They have them in aquatic cups, but they have everything filled up only halfway. I wonder how many plants they lose when they do stupid stuff like that.

I've heard people say that dumbcane arrowhead plants can be used in aquariums. The only way you can add dumbcane or arrowhead is to thoroughly rinse their roots and have their roots in the tank, NOT the whole plant. But that didn't stop my LFS from assuming aquatic means 'under water' and fully sumberging hers. It rotted after a few weeks.

Technically, dumbcane should NEVER be used with fish in any shape, form, or fashion. The properties of dumbcane that numb the gums and tongue are tiny crystals that, as the roots and leaves break down in the water, are released into the water the fish breathe. It'd be like living in a house full of shredded fiberglass... O__O;;

NP.

Hey Kyohti.... have you ever seen footage of the cells in diffenbachia that contain the crystals explode? It's nasty!! Looks like someone filled a ziploc bag full of needle sharp re-bar.

I've seen enough to tell you verifiably that every house I went to that had a betta kept with one got a STERN talking to, regardless of how well I knew the person. Seriously.

I used to carry pamphlets with me about proper betta care and a section of them was devoted to keeping dumbcane and it's cousins away from fish and houses with children and curious pets for that very reason.

Yeah... I was a wee bit of an animal rights activist when I was a teenager. I still hate PETA and don't agree with their level of zealotry... but I firmly believe that 'blissful ignorance' is no excuse for negligence in the care and maintenance of an animal that depends on you for it's quality of life. If you have a pet, no matter how big or how small... educate yourself and do right by it to the best of your capability.

Great looking tank!

I have a mirror background on my goldie tank, and everyone is telling me it looks really nice.

i saw one tank here that had a great background - a picture of "The Great Wave" printed out at a size to fit the back of the tank. it looked really nice, and blended well with the tank instead of being distracting. If you had a certain painting or something that you really like, maybe you could do the same thing for your tank. Not basic boring black, and lots better than just the wall.
