1st Saltwater-Biocube 14 (Need Help)

A FW dip on the corals, fish or inverts? It isn't a bad idea for some corals. I'd do not it with fish or mobile inverts.

Acclimate the corals just as you would your mobile inverts, slowly to bring them to the same salinity, pH, temp. With polyps I recommend also do a Lugols dip (direction on container) and then inspecting thoroughly for nudibranches, nudi egg spirals (teeny tiny you might need a magnifying glass if not used to looking for them), sundial snails, etc. Not a bad idea to QT them and repeat as necessary until you're sure they are predator/pest free.

Added Pistol Shrimp and Xenia

Today I purchased the Pistol Shrimp and Xenia from my LFS. I acclimated the Pistol Shrimp for approximately 1 1/2 hours and Xenia for approximately 2 1/2 hours. The Pistol Shrimp went directly to the back of the tank and began digging his/her hole under the live rock.

The Xenia is interesting b/c it has Green Button Polyps attached to the rock as well. I read that Polyps tend to reproduce rapidly and should not be placed next to other corals. Was it a wise decision to purchase a Xenia that is attached to a piece of live rock containing Green Button Polyps?

For those interested, I will post picture soon; I left my digital camera at work. Probably have a hard time getting a picture of the Pistol Shrimp; when do Pistol Shrimp generally come out of their holes?

Feeding Pistol Shrimp???

My tank is currently stocked with two (2) Blue Leg Hermits and one (1) Pistol Shrimp; does the Pistol Shrimp require any additional feeding?

I purchased a small turkey baster, because I figured the Pistol Shrimp would be hard to feed given that he remains close to his hole. I purchased some frozen Mysis and Brine Shrimp for feeding, but since I do not have any fish as yet, how much and how often should I feed the Pistol Shrimp?

I am getting conflicting information from what I read and what I am provided by LFS staff. The LFS staff stated that the Pistol Shrimp will live off the detritus and algae in the tank, but I have read that the Pistol Shrimp consume small shrimps as well.

By the way, "Grins" you have been a huge help in providing information for establishing my tank. I have received nothing but top notch feedback from this forum, and I and my inverts thank you for your assistance.

Fish???

In about a month, I want to start adding fish to my tank. I was thinking about (1) Clown and (1) Watchman Goby.

At my LFS, they had two Gobies listed as Diamond Goby and Spotted Goby. Are these Gobies the same as the Watchman. The Spotted Goby was white with yellow spots.

Additionally, do you think a clown, goby, and blennie would suffice? I was hoping to put three (3) fish in my tank, but I do not want to overcrowd the tank, so I will leave it with your opinion.

If there are any other fish combination you would suggest for a 14g biocube, I am open to suggestions.

I'd not worry about feeding the hermits if there is enough algae in the tank for them to eat. On the pistol shrimp, I'm not sure but if you're worried about him thaw just a teeny tiny bit of the shrimp and give it to him.

Xenia In Trouble

When I purchased the Xenia it was accompanied by a few Green Star Polyps, which have spread to the base of the Xenia. My SW parameters are good; I think the Green Star Polyps are taking over the Xenia's space on the live rock. The attached picture was taken this morning, at which time the Xenia seemed to be doing fine.

Is there anything I can do to prevent the Green Star Polyps from taking over the Xenia?
