20 gallon planted tank journal

the duckweed will probably take over your tank but you can always just skim a bunch of it out every once in a while when it gets out of control. that's what i do. one of the great things about duckweed is how much waste it consumes, or at least that's what popular opinion on fish forums would have me believe. iv managed to seriously overstock tanks in the past with the help of duckweed being there to absorb all the extra bioload. but like i said, it will take over the top of your take... and in doing so blocks out a fair amount of the light that gets to the bottom. there's some pros and cons, your tank, you decide :)

what do you mean filter sponge? do you mean a sponge filter? the ones with the airline?

pics of your aquarium please :) even if your camera isnt that great

oh, if that amazon sword of yours ends up doing well, you can expect it to be able to branch out and touch both sides of your tank. those suckers can get huge. i know, i have one and it can almost touch both sides of my 29 gallon. fyi.

I was under the impression that plants do the exact opposite for cycling a tank. I thought since they absorb nitrates and nitrites they slow down the colonization of beneficial bacteria in your filter media.

To be honest, I've found that plants neither speed or slow a cycling tank. I think the main hang-up here is the fact that plants asorb available Nitrates from the water column, not Ammonia. Ammonia in large doses can be fatal for plant life. Therefore, plants will not speed a cycling tank. YOU still need the beneficial bacteria to build-up in the tank before plants can truely go to work. Bacteria will break down Ammonia into plant soluble Nitrates, therefore the process is still reliant on how fast the BB buildup in your tank. You need your beneficial bacteria for your plants to kick into hyper drive and suck out nutrients. Cycling is cycling, plants or not.

Added 5 ember tetras. One cherry shrimp is pregnant. The baby least killies are 1f 2m and the males are fullgrown
