you see it a lot more when you're right in front of it. now, there are lots of layers of plants, but any single spot you look that has no plants, it probably cork. that's why I like it. it's not screaming at me, and there's no glossy black background.

it doesn't rot, but as of this month, some of it is starting to have deteriorated enough that it can be flaked off. In fact, one small piece came off entirely. I think it may be getting to be time to either retire or restart this tank. I either need to thoroughly clean the substrate and completely replant it or replace it with a new 20g.

just thought I'd pop into this thread and say to people who are interested in using cork like this... this tank is still holding up. The cork is soft in places and certainly creates a little extra mulm from the surface breaking down, but it has not detached from the glass and still can hold plants and gravel.
