230 Tank Build

Looking very good, Rudy!

Thanks! What a test of a one's patience. I think I am going to add LR today. Yippee.

I know the stand still needs the finish work done, but I need to throw myself a little bone. I can do finish work after some real fun!

Keith,
I just saw your video. What great engineering! I have a buddy that wants to do what you did and I couldn't figure out how to do it. You nailed it! I'm going to show him your setup so we can get some good ideas. Very few people get to see the front, back and side of their tank. Very clean too. Keep updating, please.

I like to think of it as though I have two tanks since we usually do not get to see much of the back. Not as many places for critters to hide in this case.

As far as engineering goes, the plan was always for the plumbing to go through the floor to the basement for the sump and the CL below within the stand. I am fortunate it has worked out, but there certainly has been a lot of trial and error not to mention a lot of re-configuring along the way.

Thanks again.

Excellent! No more pie tins! Thx for the pics.
Bring on the salt! And rock! Don't forget the all important before and after shots. :)

Ready for live stock

Some adjustments to the ocean's motions and revs notwithstanding, both of which I am somewhat dissapointed in their respective performance, but that is another story. :headshake2:

I am ready to begin gradual stocking of my dream tank. Also, tonight I hope to place the Solaris I5 atop the tank. What an exciting time. :headbang2:

As you can see form the pics below, all that LR which was relegated to a couple 55 gal drums is now in its place. Sorry the pics are not the best quality. I hope to improve my aquarium phot taking ability over the years. ;)

I plan to keep this thread open until all the finish work is completed, molding, etc. Nevertheless, this is as good a time as any to thank everyone who has lended their advice and/or support during this long process. I can say, it has been worth the wait.

Merry Christmas

Awesome! Thats a really good Christmas gift to yourself - after a lot of work, you finally get to see some rock and water in your tank. Looking great.

Yeah! a great Christmas result.

Congrats!

However... You need some serious rock work. That is.. um .. not good. You need an arch, some nooks, crannies, tunnels, and caves. Otherwise, the viewers will have no exploratory viewing possibilities which artificially reduces the tank's visual size and impact.

You should have that rock actually reach the surface somewhere as that projects 'depth' to your display and allows shadows. You want the tank to look as different as possible from various sides. Every side that looks different increases your tanks interest and viewing pleasure by - another tank! I think your tank should look like perhaps 4 tanks as every side should be different, else wise you will have just a monaural tank instead of a 'surround sound' tank, if you get my meaning.

Kcress - thanks for the feedback.

I agree with you to a point, but it is also a matter of personal taste, don't you think? Also, I am essentially out of rock, for now. I do really like the idea of bringing one of the mounds up toward the surface for effect, although I am a bit worried about stability I guess that is what epoxy is for. As for caves etc, there are plenty, they are simply not viewable from the distance and lighting in the pics.

Remember, this is merely the initial set-up, not the finish product. There will be plenty of time and opportunity to rearrange/change the aquascaping when adding new inhabitants in an attempt to confuse the territorial nature of longer established residents.

Cheers

Terrific....while we each need to be pleased by what we see...I think I can see some unusual possibilities in your current layout.

I would drill and secure some arches of base rock in a couple of locations, on either side down the road....
