the juli is asserting itself - africans in particular will work hard to establish where they rank on the social scale in the tank. They may settle down given time. You could add some more rockwork in there - get one side of the tank completely piled up. If they havn't settled down a bit in a couple of days re-arrange it. The juli is associating itself with the whole tank at the minute and if you get more rockwork in there it may focus on a more limited area to protect.

you may of course just have a bit of a character in the juli and might have to exchange but give them a few days before you decide this.
 
Will do. I just went in an hour or so ago and lessened the number of shells a little and made more open sand between the left side rocks and the shells.
I also moved the heater into a vertical position. The juli seemed to be using it to protect himself getting from one side to the other.
So far he has just been hanging out around that left rock pile now, without venturing too much across it to where the calvus is. So maybe that will help.

Sorry didn't spot that. It's hard to tell from the picture - maybe try a few more.

I don't think there will be a significant difference in temperament/behaviour anyway.

He also looks quite like this http://www.cichlidforum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1536 which is a transcriptus (stays a couple inch smaller than the dickfeldi).
 
I kind of hope he is a transcriptus (rather than a larger juli) but as long as he can behave himself he'll stay. I just made a "warning!" post about my shelllies getting stuck today, too.
Boy, this is adventuresome already!

Good job on the heater - I hadn't spotted the position it was in but it was probably contributing to the juli's behaviour. You have a good instinct for this.

When I set my tank up first I had a wall of rocks all the way up the back of the tank, and there were two in particular (malawis) that terrorised everyone else. Now I stack two separate piles, they are each the boss around their own pile.

The continuity in cover was encouraging them to go for the whole tank as a territory - like your heater. This kind of little personality issues is what makes them such great little fish. Tons of character.

With cichlids generally but especially africans you can expect to re-arrange your rocks every once in a while. The pecking order can change as they grow, and sometimes one or two get far too big for their boots.
 
I think you're right... it looks a lot like the transcriptus. Possibly even a mix of the dickfeldi and trans, with the way mine has a little yellowish-brown tint to it. (I've read they call the dickfeldi the brown juli, though the pic on that site doesn't really show any.) Anyway, he seems to be calming down some, so hopefully things will work out ok.
By the way, I checked out your tank pix posted in your signature... BEAUTIFUL!!
