29G Shrimp Tank

always wanted to do a shrimp tank, good luck
Do it! I find an invert tank to be very enjoyable, no fish required. :) Thanks for your reply!

I'm at my wits end. Nearly all the shrimp are dead, maybe 4 or 5 left. I have checked and tried everything! Test results are consistent and good.

ph - 8.2
KH - 10
GH - 9
Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphates - 0

It boggles my mind cause the amanos in the 58g have the same water except I ADD ferts and metricide and they are breeding machines while my easy RCS in their more "pure" environment are dying off. The snails seem fine though.

I do have 1 maybe 2 females left so I think I want to try salvaging this line and move them over to the 58g to eliminate the tank being the problem. I can see no physical signs of disease so contamination to my amanos seems unlikely. They actually appear really happy and healthy and I still find no bodies but they are certainly gone. I'm really so upset about this, I thought I had my shrimp problems solved! :(

Oh no! Could there be some kind of tank/substrate issue from before this tank's redo? Copper or some untested for "other" thing? I remember you had home water issues at 1 time that you had addressed.

I have almost opposite water here 3 -4 gdh KH & GH, lower pH (7.4 ish) but mine also did poorly & eventually died off. Are there "bad strains" (overbred?) of RCS? But my last 1s after a mix of fire & super reds were mutts, (none bred or maybe even berried), so that shouldn't be the problem. Gee whiz, are others having these problems lately? RCS AIDS or something? (ok that was alarmist, sorry). I did use old Eco & plants from...everyone local.

I hope they do better in your 58g, fingers crossed!

The substrate was stored in the basement for awhile so MAYBE something got to it. I would think it would kill them faster if that was the case but who knows. The 2 original males are still alive too which is interesting. Copper is a small possibility, I'm on a well anything is possible. Ordering a test kit. Currently watching the shrimp trap fill with snails lol. I did see 6 shrimp today though! Only 1 or 2 possible females still though and one has that separated torso thing going on now (which is something I've never seen).

I don't understand "separated torso" thing, WTF? Eek, sounds scary! Did you take a pic of that?!?...& test kit for what? Copper or ?...well water issues? I thought you super filtration system was all good? The list of possibilities could go on ad infinitum.

The one with the separation died a few days later and I actually found the body! I have not found a name for the occurrence but it is when the head separates from the torso leaving a white band. Seems to be a molting issue but I have found many different theories for the details to what causes the issue. They did molt shortly after adding them and then there was only like 2 molts since then. One of those molts was from the amano I moved over, who also turned cloudy in this tank and since being moved back to the 58g is clear and happy. So it seems entirely possible they are dying while trying to molt. So now to figure out what is causing the molting problem!

Since my amanos are good and still molting and breeding I am using the 58g for comparison. pH, KH, GH and temp are identical. TDS is the only difference. I dose the 58g so TDS is about 350 (pre-water change) where this tank is only 150. So increasing TDS seems logical....but I've read that the split in the shell could be caused by the water being too hard and making the shell too difficult/hard to molt. ???

I think I will add some of those shrimp logs and/or almond leaves to see if the acids it releases helps. People swear by those things so let's try it! I have moved 2 females and 2 males over the 58g and they are doing well so far.

IME dried out oak leaves are similar to almond leaves in many ways if that's more available to you.

What are "shrimp logs"? Sounds like a yummy appetizer, lol!

LOL Yum! Cholla wood is what I was referring to.

I have no Oak trees in my yard and I am too concerned about contamination to get them from some where else. :(

Got my copper test. Tested the tank and all my water sources. All show zero.

I am talking with Rachel O' Leary but she seems as stumped as me at this point. I was waiting to hear back from her to order the wood and leaves but now I think I'll just order them and give it a shot.

I can't find a molting but one of the females in the 58g looked paler with a small separation yesterday and today she is bright red and the separation is gone. Not getting my hopes up cause it is circumstantial evidence ATM and they all molted when I first added them to this tank too so it could just be a successful transfer molt again.
