35G Hex Planted : Journal

Is 72 degrees too cold for this tank? I moved the heater to the 40gallon with the cons and now when i put my arm in this tank, it feels very cold. The thermometer reads 72/74.

Nice decorations in the hex.

Is your water really staying around 72-74? Dang. With air conditioning (set to 74) overnight, my 10g will drop to 75-76 but never lower. Today with the cooler/wetter weather setting in, I came home to the tank just around 78-80. Just a few days ago I was coming home to temps around 82-83.

You must have good airflow. I'm jealous. :p:

 Ah your pleco & snail sharing the algae wafer at the end was priceless! The tiger barbs are pretty - will they join the barbs in your 45g?

Which lfs did you find the apple snail?

Yeah, I have a window AC upstairs and downstairs that stay on all day long. They are set to around 70-72 all the time. I checked online to see what temperature the fish prefer and 72-74 is just fine for them. Mililani Pets has the apple snails. It's in the same shopping center as the Shack in Mililani. I was going to move my tiger barbs to the 40g but they are so hard to catch! I'll end up ripping up all my plants trying to catch them. I should do it though since they prefer to school. Then I can replace the ones in the 35g with something new...any ideas?

I put a green bean in each tank with the MTS and when I dropped one in this 35g....i expected not much action BUT the loaches WENT NUTS!!! Considering they have pretty bad eyesight they dart around running into each other feeling around for the foreign food. The chewed on it for a while and then quit and started looking for something better. The pleco is chilling on the green bean and I expect the MTS to come by soon.

Used the API Freshwater Test kit and the results were pretty high for nitrates so I did a water change. Then I took out the 6 tiger barbs and moved them to the 40g upstairs with the other barbs and 3 convicts. That should take off some of the bioload. I think the nitrates came from decaying plant matter though....I dunno though. I'm interested in a DiY CO2 system and think I'm going to build one once I get my hands on some yeast. As far as the pressure that the CO2 puts out of the bottle, will it have enough power to push from underneath my 35g, up over the lid of the tank and down inside of it? Do some people run some sort of additional air pump or pressure to assist in moving the CO2?

Got another API Freshwater Test Kit in the mail. I only ordered one but Petco sent me two, one of them several days after the other. All my tanks are good except this one. It's nitrates are high which is odd to me since it's the most heavily planted. Would a 60% water change hurt?

The larger of the two gouramis nips at the smaller one from time to time but he isn't causing damage...just annoying him. Is this normal behavior or is it time to move him now?

A 60% would be fine. The non-aquatic plants could be dying off - raising nitrate. If the aquatic plants are not getting enough light of the correct type, they could also be dying off.

This hex tank does not have very much of horizontal swimming, I would definitely move one of the gourami to it's own tank.
