even with bigger/better magnets, I think you're going to have an issue keeping those jars in place. The glass is so heavy on it's own... and they're a lot taller than you need, so there is a lot of extra gravel too. Starting off with plastic would be a better start, as would using shallower planters that are vented. I've got plants in both vented and unvented containers in water, and the vented ones grow better.

They are plastic and there's holes on the bottom. Will probably poke more holes if that helps at all. I think it really is the magnet though since they seem really cheap.

I have a question about these fish... Are these Serpae tetra(Hyphessobrycon serpae)?

BTW The tank looks great.
