I was thinking of redecorating my 46gal tank and using the 3M color quartz sand in black. Read some good stuff about it. Where can I purchase this? Home Depot? Pool place?? Any suggestions? I think black color sand would look really cool. I have a black background.

I'm using it in both my 300gal and my 13 gal...and I love it. My mistake was putting it over a very lightweight substrate that was good for my plants lol.

Best bet for a place to buy it is to go to the 3m site, search it, then find a store near you that carries it. Home Depot doesn't sell it and can't get it (I tried), and finally I found a local floor resurfacing company for the first 3 bags, and later a concrete/mason store that supplies all the pool companies in town for the rest of the bags I bought. You *should* be able to find someone who sells it relatively local...apparently the stuff is insanely popular. Worst case, if you're willing to pay shipping I'll pick up a bag or two and ship them to you.

My only advice is to CLEAN IT IN HOT WATER lol. Either carefully in your sink (you don't want it settling in your traps or in your disposal) or by boiling it. The first two bags I rinsed in cold and they did ok...the third was VERY oily, and after rinsing it for over an hour with the hose I decided that hot water was the ticket. Took 15 minutes to clear the bag. It's been in my two tanks for over a month now with no issues (the oily bag I mean).

Anyhow, hope that helped!

i went to a local roofing/pool-floor supply place and picked up a 50# bag for $22.

I used about 1/2 bag to do my 29g with about a 1.5-2" thick bed.

So far, I love it.

Also, with the oily residue that is sometimes present, it's not a bad idea to run carbon filtration for a day or two after, if you don't run it all the time.

Very good advice...when I set things up I was running carbon as well.
