4' Tankganyika Tank ideas (Julies+Shellies+?)

Hmmmm...I could see potential disaster for each. But at the same time I could see it working. That's the joy of cichlids, you can never tell what it going to happen :D

The julies will most definitely claim all the rockwork you give them so you would have to split them up as you are planning...but just by looking at my 55 I can't visually imagine there being enough space for two rockpiles and a shell pit in the middle. The same goes for the two shell pits and the rockwork in the middle...Hmmmm...more thought will have to go into this.

Right-o. Visualize this: Cut two pieces of egg crate, 16"x12", dremel the corners smooth, and lay them in the bottom of a bare 55 at opposite ends. Take about 150 lbs of granite scraps of assorted sizes and build the rockpiles in a honeycomb on one side and sort of vertically, like fins, with smaller scraps breaking them into chambers on the other, and sticking it all togerher with reef epoxy. The idea is to give the rockpiles a 1'x1' footprint, sticking out another 4" along the back wall of the tank. Let that cure for a couple of days. Then, gently lift the piles and lay down some coral sand under them and reseat them, and then about an inch thick layer of coral sand acoss the whole tank. Build a fence of smaller granite scraps about 4" out from the back of the tank from one pile to the the other and add some extra sand to that. Fill with water. Plant Vallisnera americana in the center of the back strip, V. Nana on the ends by the rockpiles. Take some small scraps and tie Anubias nana (or Windolev Java Fern) to them and place them on and around the back fence. (Maybe, just maybe, affix a rock with some Bolbitis to the top of each pile. Take three scraps with Java moss on them and lean them at the corners of the fence and the rock pilesand and the center of the fence. So there should be a foot of rockpile on each side, one hole-y one crevice-y, and 2' of bare sand across the middle, about 8" front to back. Lay a couple dozen shells in that bare sand. stick a 150 watt heater (or a pair of 75s) low on the back wall set to 78ºF. Take a pair of Emperor 100s or Aquaclear 110s and install them either side of the center brace. Lay on a galss top. Stick a 4', 2x40 watt fluorescent fixture on that. Cycle the tank with 3 dozen feeder guppies. Treat for Ich. (It will happen). Feed the guppies to the bushfish and bichirs and add 6 each young Julidochromis transcriptus, Neolamprolologus leleupi, and Lamprologus stappersi. (Before this all gets going, set up a 15 or 20 with Stapps and PVC elbows loosely capped on one end in place of shells, use this tank to breed a population for the 55. Keep the breeders in there and sell off the excess fry.)

I'll think about the 33 some more, but it would be the same sort of thing with less granite and more sand.

About the sand and the cycling, if one got marine live sand from someone taking down a saltwater tank (as shows up on craigslist from time to time free or cheap), could this be put in the tank and used for a fishless cycle as the microfauna dies off in the fresh water?

You'd have a better chance with a 75, and room for a group of 10-12 Cyp's.

True, but I am working with the tanks I have. The missus would have a conniption fit if I said, "Sweetie, that 55 gallon I was going to set up? That needs to be a 75." She'd ask me what I was planning on doing with the dozen empty tanks in the garage, and why, since I am made out of money, I don't buy her more jewelry, and if I would rather have fish or send my kids to college, and by the time she ran down I would have forgotten what started her off. (Her lungs are better than my memory, and I have a very good memory.)

Your thinking is good, but my situation is such that I've got to fit the fish to the tank, not the other way around.

Tell her she doesn't need any more stuffing for her jewelry box, :headshake2: and if the kids want to go to college they should be earning scholarships. You just have to get your priorities straight... :grinyes:
What are the chances she'll get the 75 iin the divorce settlement?

* Chuckle *. Timing is of the essence. I am getting ready to set up fish room mark 1, and I need to save my brownie points for when I come home with $150 hardware bills every week for 2 months.

wow tophat man i would do the 55gal and oh yeah i have one of those wives as well she flew off her rocker when i brought home my 120gal man i couldnt pass a deal up on my 120gal setup i got the tank, stand, glass lids, strip and canopy brand new for 450.00 bucks our petsupermarket was going out of buisness and the manager said he had to get rid of it i jumped on it aye, but wait til i bring home a 220gal she will flip aye, man my 55gal is sweet but like jpappy said some tangs setups work and some dont mine does i have the brevis on the right side i have the multi's on the left side the 3 lelupis stay to the middle in the rock pile and my calvus stay mid level and the gold comps stay top level well because the calvus wont let them come down so i will move the calvus when there a little bigger man my tank is doing just fine my shellies are fully grown and dont take no crap..

Well, folks, I talked it over with the fellow at the LFS, and he agreed with those of you who said that two rock stacks and 3 species was asking for trouble. Thanks for your help on that everyone. Without y'all, I would probably have forged ahead regardless.

So at this point, I am looking a a 4' 33 gallon with 16" of rockpile at one end, a shellfield at the other, some Vallisnera tortifolia betwixt and behind, and an Eheim 2215 for filtration.

Pix when I get it running.
