40g Breeder Journal

Guess I will keep talking to myself. :)

  • Plants still are not growing very well but they aren't dying either.
  • 3 out of 4 lilly bulbs did not bloom but the one that did is doing great!
  • Algae has hit!
  • Still no livestock

Best close up I could get of the algae. It is the same algae I had on my last tank, still not 100% sure what it is but my guess is something like Spirogyra with diatoms on it.

It has a very subtle green undertone & in this picture you can see 2 spots that are green.

My anubias petite is sprouting lots of new growth! I will probably split & trim it this week.

I forgot to get a picture of my lilly, I'll get it next time. I was going to start using some RO water but this algae reminds me to be patient & give the tank time to adjust.

Coming Soon...

  • Red Root Floaters
  • Blyxa!
  • Hornwort
  • Mosses
  • Java fern
  • More Anubias
  • New 55w PC bulb
  • XP3
  • Automated Dosing System

Whoah, that's some hairy yuckness! I'm glad you're getting more plants in - is there any mess when you plant? Like, does the clay get up into the water?

Patience can be the hardest part :D I'm glad you updated, I was wondering how this was going...

you can dose any time you like as long as you're not letting anything bottom out between doses.

i doubt your p and fe are binding in your water unless you're making stock solutions where the concentration would be high.

i don't really pop-in too often on tank specific threads. sorry i didn't respond. if i'd have known there were questions...

your guess is as good as mine on your algae (looks like spirogyro covered in diatoms to me too).

rofl @ myswtsns...":hitting: Well technically we can too, it's just not appropriate. :raspberry: Thanks!"

fishycat... "Whoah, that's some hairy yuckness!"

EHEM... i may or may not resemble that remark. :uhoh:

That's okay, Dundadundun... That's what duct tape is for... :grinyes:

Ahh, but that does help to understand the arctic room temp preference... ;)

Thanks for following guy & gal! I have only had to replant a couple stems and I was SO scared of the mess that was going to following. I gently pushed the stems in the substrate with my tweezers & nothing, no mess what so ever. I almost had a heart attack the other day when I moved my powerhead and it slipped outta my hand and of course pointed right at the substrate, didn't blow enough away though. :)
There is still air trapped down there but it is slowly dissipating, I can watch it's progress along the front glass.

In regards to my deficiencies situation....My tank shows pretty much every sign of nutrient deficiency AND some signs of overdose too, I can't narrow it down. I am just staying the course keeping nutrient levels & CO2 high and trying to keep the aquarium as clean as possible.

 You guys are funny!

 Chris has his rose-colored glasses on... I guess there is a sort of swampy beauty to the hairy yuckness (algae or Dundadundun, take your pick ).

I've got a small natural planted tank with soil topped with small gravel. I feel it's not planted enough & am debating adding dwarf hairgrass, but worry about the mess. I think it's a grit-yer-teeth-and-go-for-it situation.

Dry-Start Method would fill 'er up really well!
