40g Breeder Journal

Dry-Start Method would fill 'er up really well!

Yeah, it would... But I've got all crypts in there right now, don't want to go through leaf melt madness!

I may drain, plant & refill... But things were nasty when I filled - floaty dirt everywhere! Took a lot of paper towels to get it out. :yuck:

Could you replant the crypts somewhere else for now?

I actually moved some of them out of my 10g because I'm getting a bunch if new stems & wont have room... I'd set up another tank, but I think that'd provoke attempted spousal homicide... anyway, we'll see what I can cone up with.

Sorry for the threadjack, Myswtsins!

Algae got out of control! Pictures are not technically in order, it is just to show how fast this stuff grows.

After WC & removal

3 days after a WC & removal
100_4503.jpg

I replaced the 6500k bulb & raised the light about 2" a week ago & did a 2.5g WC with RO water 2 days ago. The algae seems to have slowed down at least. I will do another 2.5g RO WC today and see if it helps with the growth deformities I am seeing.

The surviving lilly is doing well. It is so light and delicate though, not what I was expecting. The bubbles are CO2 not O2.

It keeps ending up UP here!

New growth on the anubias was very yellow, you can see in this picture that it is start to green up and thicken from the tip.

My RRF & blyxa has not arrived yet but I did get some hornwort in there. I got a ton of low light plants tossed in there now, once the lights come on I will take a few new pictures.

looks like rhizoclonium... and you need ferts badly, not r/o water...

Description Strands of fine green or brownish threads which are soft and slimy. Cause Low CO2 and poor water flow. Low nutrient levels. General lack of maintenance. Removal Increase CO2 levels and check nutrient dosing. Give the tank a good cleaning. Overdosing excel should also clear it. Amano shrimp will eat it.

How long would you recommend that I follow a proposed solution without results, or even worsening the situation, before I should try something else though?

Today's readings
pH - 6.5
Gh - 8
Kh - 12
Co2 - 112 ppm
Nitrates - ~40
Phosphates - 10+ (high has it goes)

So I have CO2 & sufficient nutrients. Now all my test kits could be bad (it's possible) but I have calibrated my phosphate test so I know that is good & I get different readings on my other tanks so it is not like the tests are stuck.

A few things that shouldn't occur together!
- High Co2 & BBA
- High Co2 & rhizoclonium
- Low pH & snails (although I am not sure 6.5 is low enough)

So I DO agree with you but all the evidence is stacked against us and I have asked for helped numerous times & no one (not even the esteemed gurus) have been able to explain my situation, I just keep going in circles. The last tank I had (33 hex) had this algae and what cured it was I turned the lights down to 4 hours & went away for 2 weeks, so no ferts or WCs. When I came home the algae was nearly all gone and the plants exploded! So it was nearly the opposite of the recommended solution that cured it.

My thought is that one of the buffers that raises my KH could be "buffering" the exchange of nutrients between the water and the plants. So I want to cut my tap with some RO water, if I have to cut it majorly I will add GH booster to ensure I have those nutrients as well.
