so cal
i just bought my first aquarium. a used 40gallon with a penguin 330 filter. i wanted to put some angels and some platys in it. i already have 2 chinese algae eaters. tanks cycled and stuff already. sound alright?

How many angels and platies do you have in mind? CAEs can get aggressive as they get older and larger, so you'll want to be on the watch for that.

the caes are about 4 inches long. they were in my girlfriends tank with some platies and a rasbora. they didnt bother any of them. about how big do they get before they start causing problems usually? i was thinking four or five of both angels and platies.

You should take out the CAE's. They grow to a little over 5 inches. They really don't eat much algae at all so they won't keep you tank any cleaner and eventually they'll start to eat the protective slime coating on your fish. Save yourself some trouble and sell them to your lfs.

Correction, CAE grow over 10 inches.
Sorry for the double post. :P :banhim:

Four or Five Angels is too much for that tank; you could perhaps take on 4 or 5 very small angels, hopefully 2 will pair, and then you would return the others as the pair will not tolerate spare wheels. You could also just get one Angel if there may be a difficulty rehoming/returning others. I'm fairly sure you could have the platies. Round off with some corydoras, maybe a bristlenose pleco, and perhaps some smaller fish (harlequin rasporas or small tetras); there is a chance the latter could be Angel food but apparently if you get the Angel very young and raise him/her with the rasporas/tetras there is a better chance that the Angel will not regard them as a snack buffet.

thanks for the help. im probly gonna stay away from angels for now, and i think i have another home for the algae eaters. i really just want a good colorful tank. now im thinking platies guppies and neons. and also from what ive been reading shrimp are good tank cleaners?
