What plants are hardy enough for the hard alkaline water, and rooted enough to take cichlid abuse...
 
both tanganyikan and mbuna.
 
I'm not putting ten fish or anything, just a few, a couple tangs and maybe a peacock or two. My wifes dad breeds them and has for over 20 years. He is helping me pick out the fish, all as juvies, and then raising them together.

Tank is too small for tanganyikans and peacocks IMO (which is right) haha

Would be a nice tank for a group of shellies and a calvus. Def. no mbuna or haps. Maybe a group (1 male, 3-4 females) of a Aulonocara species, but that would be all.
