I am putting my betta in a 5 gallon tank and was wondering if I could have 3 platies with him. He is currently housed with platies in his quaranine tank.

NO

5G is not sufficient for a betta and 3 platies.

Platies like / need room to swim and would do much better in a 10G or even better with a 15/20T.

I'll second that with a resounding no. The inch per gallon rule usually leads to overstocking, but in this case you're looking to go over even that:

Betta: 3 inches
Platy (x2): 2.5 x 2 = 5

Total: 8 inches / 5 gallons

Don't make you betta a sardine! Give him room!

alright...I had to give up a platy and the only tank I had was a one gallon with no heater or filter. I gave him to my friend. He is STILL alive 5 months later. Craziness. The platies I have are less than an inch.

So you're saying that it is crazy that the fish is still alive in a 1g with no heater or filter?
EXTREMELY IMHUMANE, perhaps. Regardless of what you meant by that last post...

Will your patties always be less than an inch? You should have a home that will fit them in adulthood. Also the INCH GALLON RULE is BUNK!!!!! Fish swim and move, they need more than a gallon per inch. Also take care that you aren't stunting their growth by keeping them in such tiny homes.

...you seem to be arguing to have the betta with the patties. IF you want to put them in, do it, but don't say anything on here, because you'll look like a fish torturer and people will type mean things at you. People gave you GOOD ADVICE. IF you cared enough about your fish to post the question, then take the good advice.

sorry if I sounded mean. I just was telling people what happened. I had no other choice with that fish. No petstores would take it.

I am still deciding wether or not to even GO with my plan. I never said I was CERTAIN.

I DO appreciate the help here because I truly love my fish.

P.S. are there any other fish that could go with him other than platies? thanks

What is wrong with just the betta in the 5 gallon? How come you want to have more? A betta is totally fine alone by himself. I have 1 betta in my 5 gallon, and I've been keeping only 1 betta in that tank for years. I had one of my bettas live for 3 years in that tank, would he have lived that long if I had added other fish? I doubt it!

sorry. It soundes like everyone is mad at me now.

I'll just forget it then.

I did do research on this and I found that many people have kept a betta and 3 platies in a 5 gallon.

I guess I'll just have the betta by himself in the 5 gallon!! He'll be happy. Although he does like the platies now..LOL! HE's weird :P

Before the platies I was actually thinking about 2 ADFs and that's probably what I'll go with if it works out.

you CAN keep a betta and 3 platies in a 5 gallon its fine
just keep up with the water quality by doing water changes twice a month of about 20%
platies are small and not overly active like lets say zebra fish. zebra fish or any other fast moving fish i wouldnt get because they need more surface area to swim, but platies?? lol come on people stop playing fish police, they will be fine
