5 Gal suggestions for college student!

Endlers, Lesser killies, Gertrudes rainbow fish, Peacock gudgeon, Goo-obo gudgeon, Pigmy Dwarf Rasbora, cherry shrimp and if you want to go brackish Bumble bee gobies will all work in smaller tanks and I know some people who do keep white clouds quite successfully in 5g.

Some of these fish are harder to find then others and may have to be ordered online, but IMO these are some of the best little fishy jewels you can have in a tank, well worth the time and effort and a nice break from the ever popular betta…which I do still love. ;)

So if I did femala betas and ghost shrimp, how many of each should I have? Sorry I'm new at this, and have learned that most pet store employees have no clue what they're talking about after one sold me a "tiny" little pleco when I was 12. He had to find another home very quickly.

You could prolly get away with 2 female beta and ghost shrimp. However I would watch them to see if any agression takes place between them.

On a smaller tank you can almost take the 1g per inch to heart. Just take the max inch of the fish when it will be fully grown. female betta = 2in, so 2 of those and some shrimp seem fine. Why not one make tho? They have great personality, do you just want more than one fish?

I'm actually thinking a beta and ghost shrimp would be fine, but I was just wondering what I could get away with. I've had lots of male beta in the past, and I love them, but it's always fun to look for something different.

Thanks for all the replies so far, by the way! I really appreciate it.

I'm certainly not worried about them being dumb, my last beta pretty much takes the cake there!
Sorry to be difficult, but bettas are not dumb. If they have enough space, enough interaction with you, and decorations to swim around they are intelligent and fun. Mine recognize me and try to challenge my boyfriend by flaring. One even bit him hard on the finger when he offered to feed the fish for me :D

they only seem dumb if they lack mental stimulation and are bored.

In my expierience, no you can't do two female bettas in a 5g, it is simply to small a tank to have more than one betta, regardless of gender, and too small a group to keep aggression down.

I guess you missed the whole "However I would watch them to see if any agression takes place between them." part.
dude, it's likely in a tank that small, agression will come up no matter what.

No I didn't mean to insult the breed or anything. My betta was very active and we just teased him because he'd swim so quickly and do loops and such. And now that I've been reading more about beta in this forum I'm thinking another one would be the best choice! :D

<edit!>
And of course even if there's a small chance of aggression I'd like to stick with one fish, because being at college without a car does limit things and I'd be stuck if I had to seperate anyone! Thank you both!

One betta and some shrimp? I already have a cave and lots of plants, though they're fake... D':
