Just thinking of a 55 gallon setup and was curious if it would work.

1 Jack Dempsey
2 Raphaels
2 Pictus Cats.
2 Clown Loaches

The Jack Dempsey is a maybe, I am just trying to find a interesting fish for midwater swimming. But have heard that JD's are to aggressive.

If have a better suggeston let me know.

Not sure about the other fish you mentioned, but clown loaches need to be in groups of at least three, and I have more often than not that the minimum amount of clown loaches one should have is 5 (Shhhh, dont tell anyone but I only have four and they are doing good.)

Clown loaches also get pretty big (in the area of a foot long, if I remember right. Some people, I think in the orient, even eat clown loaches, so they must be big enough for that meal to be worth it) but I can say that my clown loaches are growing at a very slow rate. I have had them for over 8 months and it seems as if they are still as small as the ones I see at the LFS all the time, so if they grew at all, it was a very small amount.

Clown loaches are also pretty shy in a lot of cases and so a larger group of them will help them come out into the open more often.

Also, like I said, I am not sure about the other fish, but I think I have heard that keeping a pictus cat is not recommended if it is with fish that could nip at its 'wiskers'. I am pretty sure they are also able to get large enough to eat other fish and so I would think that clown loaches could become an expensive lunch since they are all mostly bottom dwellers. Again, I am just going back on memory as far as the pictus goes and so I could very well be wrong.

hmm

no offense, thanks for the response. As for the pictus, they will eat things, but to my understanding, they only eat things that will fit into their mouths.

I was not aware clown loaches reached that size. I thought they maxed out at 8 inches.

The other thing I had considered oppossed to the JD would be some angel fishes, but again, not sure if they would work well with the pictus and raphaels.

Pictus cats hit 10", Dempsey as well... A 55 is barely wide enough for them to turn around in. If you want big fish, get a big tank... A 55 is hardly big in the grand scheme. A dempsey in the wild stakes out a territory as far as it can see in all directions, and a 55 is just a wee bit shy of that (by about 4x I'd say).

i had a jack dempsey once. :duh: :shark: ihad a couple of red line snake heads and an electric cat. THAT MONSTER HACKED A HUGE HOLE IN MY ELECTRIC CAT UNTIL IT DIED OF IT'S INJURYALL IN 2 DAYS IT CHASED THE LARGER SNAKE HEAD (8 INCHES VS.S THE JD'S 5INCHES) STRAIGHT OUT THE TANK AND TORE A HOLE IN THE SMALLER ONE . IT LATER DIED OF OF IT'S INJURIES AGAINST ALL MY ATTEMPTS. I BOUGHT A SIX INCH WOLF FISH IT BIT IT'S HEAD OFF! I ENDED UP ADDING OTHER CICLIDS LIKE FIRE BELLIES AND CONVICTS AND A COUPLE OF OSCARS. :mad2:

or leopard ctemopoma very nice don't get too big either!

Before getting any knife or elephant nose, look at their adult size and imagine them in a 55.

according to this site and many others, the largest size I have seen listed for pictus cat is 6 inches. planetcatfish list them as only getting 5.5 inches, where did you get 10 inches from?
