55 Gallon Stocking Ideas

I agree you need to research before buying. Especially if your looking at a cichlid setup. Because the wrong combo would result it lots of torn up dead cichlids. I wanted to know hardness so I could cut down some of the possibilities. For instance German blue rams and discus don't do well in hard water and African Cichlids don't do well in really soft water. I was just saying with soft water I would do a discus ram setup and it would look really colorful and cool. If you want planted I vote a planted rainbowfish setup. But if you have really hard water you wouldn't have to change a thing to do a African Cichlid tank.

You can do some angels. This link might help give you some ideas. Keep in mind there are tons of other options. Not just what is listed, plus this is only Cichlids. It doesn't include Tetra's, Rainbowfish or any other community fish, it's strictly cichlids.

Mmm, nice deal! Would those be Emperor or Penguin biowheels? Either is a great filter, but I'm partial to my Emperors, lol.

If it were me, I would do a community tank because I love to see lots of different fish rather than one or two.

1 angelfish
15-20 midsize (1.5-2 inch) tetras like lemons or von rio tetras (aka flame or fire tetra OR similar sized barbs like cherries (males are nice and bright, females drab) OR GloFish (genetically altered zebra danios to have bright flourescent colors of jellyfish and such)
6-10 cories, emerald, bronze, or skunks would be some options
1-5 nerite snails (best algae eaters ever)

You could do 2 schools of 15-20 if you wanted or 1 large school of 25-30. IMHO, it's best to have 1 large school over 2 small schools. The effect of a school sweeping across a tank is much more dramatic than a piddly little 6-fish school, not to mention the fish will be much more at ease.

A mbuna tank would give you the fake reef idea you are going for. The down side is they are very aggressive so not much else can live with them

Here's an article about them:

It's long but is a good overview about their care and what species to avoid. I believe there is even some stocking suggestions for a 55 gallon. I have a mbuna tank myself and I adore it. So much color and activity but they aren't for everyone.

now ya got ME thinkin of one!!

Def get a school o bottom feeders cories r great you won't go wrong with them. With that ten if you move the mollies to the bigger tank I have an idea for you. You could turn that into a daphnia farm. Easy to culture and makes fish real happy

Wouldn't the Angel fish eat the others?

What is a daphnia farm?

In addition to above... do I have to have soft water if I want to house tetras?

Someone at work suggested an Asian Zen aquarium, does anyone know what that is?
