For the first time in almost a month I went down into the basement today to check the tanks. My wife has been feeding them since I broke my hip, and I figured it would be a good idea to see for myself how they were doing. Obviously they needed partial water changes, but I was dismayed to look into the 55 and not see even a single cichlid after I dropped in the NLS pellets. The Syno's were swimming around casually, but no sign of the multi's, buescheri, or moorii that are normally visible at any given time. When I reached into the tank to check the thermometer, I noticed the water was cold... 60 on the thermometer.

When my wife got home from work I got her to help me do partials on the upstairs tanks, then started tearing down the 55 in the basement for a thorough cleaning and inspection.
I found 1 dead buescheri, 2 live juvies, 2 moorii, a single juvie multi, and 9 Syno's who didn't seem to mind the cold at all. I figure ~25 fish were missing, and didn't find nearly enough skeletal remains to account for them all. Apparently I had taken out the heater way back last summer, and didn't realize I hadn't put it back in as the weather (and the basement) got colder. :swear: :swear::swear: 'Kicks self in *** repeatedly'
The sole suviving multi is now in the 10 gallon with the assassin snails and a colony of Endler's. It's the only tank where he/she wouldn't be a quick snack after I tore out his shell bed and hiding places along with it. The heater is back in the tank, and it remains to be seen what becomes of the other survivors.
