55g tang ideas

i kinda like the pitch black look. do they get big, aggressive, breeding info????

From what I've gathered they're a mid-size fish (4-5" range), but the juvies I have hardly seem to have grown at all after several months. Not a fish you want to keep more than a breeding pair of in a 4' tank, but shouldn't be a problem for other species in general. Time will tell, but I don't anticipate mass murder among the multi's, buescheri, and Syno's.

For the first time in almost a month I went down into the basement today to check the tanks. My wife has been feeding them since I broke my hip, and I figured it would be a good idea to see for myself how they were doing. Obviously they needed partial water changes, but I was dismayed to look into the 55 and not see even a single cichlid after I dropped in the NLS pellets. The Syno's were swimming around casually, but no sign of the multi's, buescheri, or moorii that are normally visible at any given time. When I reached into the tank to check the thermometer, I noticed the water was cold... 60 on the thermometer. When my wife got home from work I got her to help me do partials on the upstairs tanks, then started tearing down the 55 in the basement for a thorough cleaning and inspection.
I found 1 dead buescheri, 2 live juvies, 2 moorii, a single juvie multi, and 9 Syno's who didn't seem to mind the cold at all. I figure ~25 fish were missing, and didn't find nearly enough skeletal remains to account for them all. Apparently I had taken out the heater way back last summer, and didn't realize I hadn't put it back in as the weather (and the basement) got colder. :swear: :swear::swear: 'Kicks self in *** repeatedly'
The sole suviving multi is now in the 10 gallon with the assassin snails and a colony of Endler's. It's the only tank where he/she wouldn't be a quick snack after I tore out his shell bed and hiding places along with it. The heater is back in the tank, and it remains to be seen what becomes of the other survivors.

dude that sucks. i dont have to worry about that happening in my tanks so i never really use a heater unless i bump it way up to cure disease. ive now got the 2 lelupis and the goby cichlid in the 55g with lots of rock but the one lelupi is beatin the crap out of the other so i have them on opposite end of the tank. what the crap happened?

Either you have 2 males, or the female isn't interested in the male. If you want a breeding pair of just about any cichlid it's best to start with 5-6 and move out the extras after a pair forms. Even then it's a good idea to have a spawning cave that the smaller female leleupi can get into but the male can't.

Wow that sucks todd so i guess the Buescheri deal is on hold now.. but i clearly understand.. later buddy i hope all rebounds soon..
