58g Planted w/overflow and sump

Wow...just went through all 31 pages. Nice build thread! I love the way it's grown in. LOL good luck on the super reds. Yours look an awful lot like mine at that size.

Mark

Thanks Mark! That's some dedication to go through all my nonsense lol but I appreciate it! So what do your BNs look like now? (I assume they are grown)

Well, you know I'm so jealous of your crypt spathes!! They're fantastic!

Some plants go into "reproduction mode" when they aren't quite getting what they need, like annual terrestrial plants (eek, it's getting cold &/or days are shorter. I need to make seeds, now!").

Maybe for your crypts it's "Eek, I'm being shaded or root crowded by those gosh darn happy Usterianas" or "where's my root tabs?" ; "quick before I die"... & that's my simplistic view of plant reproduction, lol, a little stress is not always a bad thing.

lol I like your story telling. I did think about that (reproducing before death theory) but ruled it out cause it is so happy and never loses any leaves. Funny you mention the roots though cause I was literally under my tank a couple hours ago installing a light and got to look at the bottom of the tank and was like "cool, look at those roots!"

Sorry for flash but the new light doesn't help in this case lol

Well, I'm surprised at the evenness of the roots' growth but I'm not sure I've seen it before from underneath. Good pics! & good thoughts, you know I'm clueless, but thinking hard, lol.

Far from clueless and I appreciate your thoughts. :)

So just passed 4 weeks on the QT fish and everyone is looking great. Did a WC 2 days ago and commented to myself that the celebes was looking awesome and I could even see some growth. Well, today he is gone...like gone gone I can't find a body gone. I looked and looked and the tank is pretty empty but no body. No clue what happened but he must have jumped and my dogs ate him or worse (for my conscience anyways) is he got sucked up during WC. Guess I don't have to worry about what to do with a single celebes anymore. :(

Next, RCS and danios. I feel like the colony of RCS is a bit small but they do have lots of hiding places so maybe I just don't have a grasp of the colony size (although I look pretty dang hard). I was going to set up another RCS only tank but I didn't and I don't like the idea of a fresh setup for shrimp so I think my best bet now is to just put the danios in with the RCS and see what happens. I mean I know they won't eat the adults but I do expect to see a decline/halt in colony growth. Thoughts?

My thoughts, while cooking dinner, the danios will at least try to eat even adult shrimp. So hopefully all your shrimp are hiding. You've got lots of plants, etc, that may help, they're very good hiders when they need to be & I bet they do.

Ugh, I'm sorry about your last Celebes, sometimes fish do just disappear. I, too, have wondered if I vacuumed out a fish or other critter, but nothing you can do about it now. I used to practically blind myself trying to find all the shimplets in the WC buckets until I toughened up a lot & had enough shrimp to care less. As you said, at least you don't have to worry about whether to buy more, positive thinking! Worth a shot with bargain fish, you did you best.

So now you have an empty Q tank, huh? What will you do? What does Rachel have? Yes, tempting options, I'm sure.

I do remember looking under my tanks when I had UG filters to see a tons of roots & detritus while trying to clean under the plates with skinny airline tubing. UGH! I don't miss those days!

Really? I thought they weren't that prey driven and wouldn't go after adults (internet) but I've never kept them with shrimp myself so, ok then.

No no no, they are still in the QT, especially since the disappearance of that last guy. I am going on vacation next week too and I'd rather them stay where they have been then not be able to observe them in a "new" setup. Rachel doesn't carry the fish I need, they are all soft water species. :(

SOOO, remember when I said the colony wasn't as big as I thought it should be? Well, I just found a shrimp I thought was dead stuck to the overflow but it's not dead yet. It has a cloudy body, split in the abdomen and it is having trouble with it's legs. Basicly 3 different signs of 3 different ailments. UGH I was just getting ready to try a group in the 29g again too double ugh. So of course I tested the tank and got the usual results ammonia - 0 , nitrite - 0, nitrate - 5, pH -8.2, GH - ? my kit suddenly isn't registering anything (tried 3 different sources) KH - 10, TDS - 240, Temp - 72F, Phosphate - 1, Iron - 0, copper - 0. Did a big water change yesterday and cleaned out the sump but did another water change right now. First thing I am going to try to address is molting issues because I have had this issue before. Making some RO water to do a water change with, bringing down the GH/TDS and cooler water is supposed to help force molting. I did look around and didn't see any others looking rough but found quite a few juvis *shrugs*.

Oh, just enjoy your vacation! Not a time to try anything new. Your shrimp in pics look happy! Is the problem 1 just molting? Juvies are good. I know you're much more clued into shrimp issues than I am. No GH is strange, but address that when you get home, it may be part of the shrimp's problems. I wouldn't call 240 TDS "high", but maybe higher than your usual?

My danios bit my husband's hand (non-hairy part) Hard! last water change or so. They chase sewellia etc. away from food even when they're not hungry. Those are all much bigger than shrimp so, meh, I'm skeptical. Mine also strike duckweed just because it's there...What exactly does "not prey driven" mean?

Problem is that the population just isn't as big as it should be and I happend to find this one sickly guy possibly explaining the low population. He was alive this morning but has now passed. Body couldn't have been more than 1 hr old and it stunk something awful. The shell also slid right off. I am gonna contact a shrimp guru and see what they say. In the meantime I have done a couple gallons worth of RO WCs. It's something I've been considering anyway because my pH, GH and KH are well beyond where they need to be and I have a RO unit so may as well use it! So far it has moved the pH exactly 0.0 lol. Ordering a GH kit.

240ppm is about normal for this tank. Source water is about 190 than added ferts and such bring it up a bit. RO water is 2-3ppm btw.

Yeah, the danios are hungry little fellows, I'll give em that! They always bite me when I put my hands into the tank, I'd go as far as to say they actually graze on me lol. So I can see where that'd be an issue with the shrimp. Thanks for your input!
