I think kids do just fine with fish tanks. I have an almost 3 year old who not only likes to look at them but knows all the types of fish and likes to say "hi" to the "grawmis" every morning and check on her pleco on a regular basis. Kids are very interested in everything and can be taught to respect animals at a young age.
awww, that's sweet "grawmis" :)
yes, I think it's not only possible, but beneficial, for young children to be exposed to animals. Not only do they learn respect for their pets, but, indeed, for all of nature. Kids, after all, are fascinated with grass growing out of cracks in the sidewalk. There's nature everywhere, you just have to teach them how to find and appreciate it. Besides, people raised around animals are much less likely to develop allergies (this mostly applies to furred animals, of course. haven't heard of anyone allergic to fish before :D )

that's how i grew up, looking at every little bug and critter, and my love affair with living things has only blossomed into a career.

so, bravo, akapaul for taking the initiative to share some wonder and responsibility with your 3-year-old.

My parents got me a fishtank when I was about 3 and I have kept fish ever since. I think your daughter will LOVE a tank of her own. I would stock her with something that has some sort of personality, the puffer previously mentioned seems to be a fun idea. I would be careful about the frogs, as I had one when younger and it did jump out and scare the **** out of me. I will never keep them again. Good Luck!
