Hi

I've seen a nice hexagon shaped tank reduced in my LFS there isn't any capacity on it, the storeman said its about 6 gallons. Its a good price and includes a hood and light. I'm really tempted to get it, but want to know what you all think first.

I have a set up and cycled tank so can cycle this one no problem. I would like a Betta and a few corys in it. (If I get it) Would the tank be big enough? Would it need a filter? I would plant it with plants from my main tank, but have one I could use if it would be beneficial.

Any thoughts on this would be welcome.

It's big enough for a betta and some corys. (As long as they're smaller sized corys and you don't have more than four.)

Naturally you need a filter unless you want to be doing 4-5 gallons worth of water changes every other day.

Of course for plants you'll need to make sure your lighting is in keeping with the requirements of the tank size and the type of plants. Make sure it's a fluorescent type lighting, as incandescent will not do much for plants.

Sure, go for it if it's a good deal...I would ! Lol

As far as plants, if you get java fern, java moss and water sprite for plants, you'll not have to worry about the lighting requirements. I have a 2 gallon with those plants in it that has NO light over it and those plants are doing just fine...and better still.......NO algae worries !!

A betta would do nicely in such a tank, not sure about the cories though...a hex shape tank doesn't leave much ground space, and cories spend most of the time on the bottom. Perhaps a few of the pygmy cories if you can find them, would be ok. They're pretty small and they also tend to spend more time in the mid area of a tank than most other cories.

Filter ? Yeah, I would put a filter on that. Something that won't move the water around too much and cause the betta troubles. Hmm....that could be tricky, but...a sponge filter would work well though. Something like this might work out ok...I have some like this one that have just one sponge and that would probably work out better in a 6 if you can find one....

Sounds good to me Lass ! Share pics if you can, when you get it all together. :D

4 corys, even little ones would be a tight fit in that tank. You could always get some kind of shrimp or snail to put in with a beta though. Also I would go with a small flitter uf you can. Just make sure it doesn’t agitate the water too much. Beta's are not famous for liking currents.

Definitely a heater for the betta and no cories, not enough space on the bottom. As suggested, shrimp or snails as tank mates. If you really want cories, look at a 10 gallon and you can fit a few of the smaller/dwarf species with your betta and it might cost you about the same as the 6!

Thank you for all the replys.

It would have to be heated here, quite cold here at the moment, and we don't have heating on in house when not in! (only in fish tank 24 hours)

Now I've thought about it, I think a 10 gallon would probably be better. A Betta on its own even in a well planted tank, wouldnt be much. The tank just seemed a bargain. There didn't look to be much ground space.

I do want a Betta though! My main tank I think may be just too nippy and I daren't risk it. (Bleeding heart Tetras, Platys and Emporer Tetras) Its the Bleeding hearts what I think would be nippy.

I'll have to talk my husband into letting me have another tank!
