I'm sorry, I thought I was being pretty clear. Let me break it down some more.
1. Go the pharmacy and ask for clove oil at the counter. It will probably not be on the shelf, although you can look over by the toothache remedies. It is also sold as Eugenol. You need drops, not gel or anything else.
2. Fill a basin with water. It can be a large salad bowl or something like that. You can use aquarium water...it doesn't really matter.
3. Put the fish in the water.
4. Keep adding drops of clove oil until you see the fish stop struggling and go limp.
5. Wait a little while, to make sure it is completely asleep.
6. You can add vodka, although I have never done this (even though I do have vodka almost always at hand). Because I've never done it, I can't say how well it works or how much you should use. What I simply do is put the fish in a bag at this point. They will still be asleep.
7. Put the fish in the freezer. It is best if the freezer is as cold as possible, which is why I suggest turning the freezer up as high as it will go a while before you do it. Don't forget to turn it back down when you take out the fish, which you can do in another 15 minutes or so.
Here is an article about euthanasia if you want more information:
http://www.fishchannel.com/fish-health/euthanasia.aspx
The above process is how I euthanize all fish that are bigger than a couple of inches.
Euthanasia is a necessary evil. Either the fish are sick beyond hope, or sometimes fish sometimes need to be culled. It bothers me when I see neon tetras or zebra danios with bent spines or misshappen mouths. These should have been culled by the wholesaler, they never should have made it to the store. No one should be accidentally given a fish with a genetic deformity.
Clove oil is good to have on hand as it's excellent by itself for small fish euthanasia, or in conjunction with other methods for larger fish. Not pretty, but a fact of life...and not cruel either, just the opposite.
