Well, I didn't even bother telling him about the vodka because it seems to me like an Indian family is not going to let their 14 year old boy have vodka, lol.

Not like my family (Cuban/Spanish) who was giving me my own little glasses of wine at Thanksgiving from the time I was 7!! LOL

why do u let it sit? I am really scared, I don't like killing animals:( Not even bugs or insects, it seems sort of cruel, yes i would do it if was suffering, but it seems like betrayal to me, as im hand feeding them, they look good, and they trust that nothing bad is going to happen to them, i guess. I'm still thinking about it. I'll take a look at other options. And, sorry, but could u be clearer.

u said u put it in water, and then u add drops. drops of WHAT? clove oil, i presume? and why put it in the freezer, won't the fish suffer as u said the fish will barely be breathing, sorry, im super confused.

They can't trust anything..they are not at that level of development. They sleep...they die. Simple. Brash physical trauma works as does a sharp knife.

I'm sorry, I thought I was being pretty clear. Let me break it down some more.

1. Go the pharmacy and ask for clove oil at the counter. It will probably not be on the shelf, although you can look over by the toothache remedies. It is also sold as Eugenol. You need drops, not gel or anything else.

2. Fill a basin with water. It can be a large salad bowl or something like that. You can use aquarium water...it doesn't really matter.

3. Put the fish in the water.

4. Keep adding drops of clove oil until you see the fish stop struggling and go limp.

5. Wait a little while, to make sure it is completely asleep.

6. You can add vodka, although I have never done this (even though I do have vodka almost always at hand). Because I've never done it, I can't say how well it works or how much you should use. What I simply do is put the fish in a bag at this point. They will still be asleep.

7. Put the fish in the freezer. It is best if the freezer is as cold as possible, which is why I suggest turning the freezer up as high as it will go a while before you do it. Don't forget to turn it back down when you take out the fish, which you can do in another 15 minutes or so.

Here is an article about euthanasia if you want more information:
http://www.fishchannel.com/fish-health/euthanasia.aspx

The above process is how I euthanize all fish that are bigger than a couple of inches.

Euthanasia is a necessary evil. Either the fish are sick beyond hope, or sometimes fish sometimes need to be culled. It bothers me when I see neon tetras or zebra danios with bent spines or misshappen mouths. These should have been culled by the wholesaler, they never should have made it to the store. No one should be accidentally given a fish with a genetic deformity.

Clove oil is good to have on hand as it's excellent by itself for small fish euthanasia, or in conjunction with other methods for larger fish. Not pretty, but a fact of life...and not cruel either, just the opposite.

the freezing method is actually long and painful wheile the vodka kills them alot faster. i know i couldnt kill it so good luck.

So the vodka burn of the gills is better as its for a shorter time? Hmmm..go figure. I think the garbage disposal has you all beat.

It isn't long and painful if the fish is anesthetized, which is what clove oil does. It is what they use when they perform surgery on koi.

Give it shot and report back to us.
