75 gal suddenly cloudy?

I'm going through the same thing. Tank was set up Oct. 31 with pool filter sand. I'm wondering if it is the sand.
All my other tanks have Eco-complete in them and I never experienced green water in them.
I'll post some links I had found regarding green water so you can read through them.
One person said they just let it ride it out. So that's my plan also at this point. And perhaps a 4 day black out if that doesn't work.
Here's the info. Take what you want, and leave the rest!

This next link had a odd suggestion of using willow branches for a fix. I'd try it if it were summer time here!

The diatom filter sounds like the best option, but since I'm pretty well broke at the moment, and don't know anyone that I could borrow one from, that is probably out. I'm going to try the blackout and see what happens.

I like the willow-branch idea too, but don't have a willow tree, and nothing is growing at the moment with all the cold going on. :)

Hopefully the blackout will take care of whatever this is.

Good luck! By the way, if you don't want to use Excel that's fine. My main point was that you need a healthy balance of light, nutrients, and CO2 to prevent algae. So try a blackout then raise the nitrates, see if that helps.

This is day 2 of being covered. I've decided not to feed them as well - not remove the cover at all. 3 or 4 days fast won't hurt the fish, and maybe less food in the water will help kill off the algae as well. Hopefully it will work. I haven't even peeked under the cover, so we'll see what happens. I have my fingers crossed.

3 is the normal number I believe, take a look inside and see if everything is clearer, if not then try another day. I definitely wouldn't go more than 5 days.

Get a Green Killing Machine UV from Petsmart. I paid less than $40.

From what I read, UV is not a good long-term solution. And since I cleared up this bout of problems, I'm going to instead save up for a micron/diatom filter for future use. :)

Question on that though - how do you "charge it with DE"? I know DE is a powder (I use it for insect control inside/outside the house since it's much less dangerous to my 4 legged babies), but how do you charge the filter with it? I'm assuming there may be instructions once I actually get the filter, but it's bogging my mind NOW. LOL
