first is i have no ammonia in my tap water so my grannys been filling my tank the last 3 months without any water treatment and my fish are sitll alive so is it still safe to continue doing that she lets the water sit for 24 hours ahead of time first? and 2nd ive been askin on AC chat bout scrubbie pads but kept getting frozed on me grrrrr dang internet goin to heck! anyways the filter pads are like the greenbay colors green on one side and yellow on the other side and there in my smaller filter thats setup for now but those are safe scrubbies right? my fish dont seem to have changed yet so i assume thats a good sign? and are scrubbies better then regaler filter pads? if they are then im goin with scrubbies as there cheaper. and 3rd Q is, can i use cotton u get from petstores instead of useing filter pads to? if yes then im gunna mix the scrubbie and filter pads togther.. i want the best filterateion i can get.. and im doin this again cause my tank is cloudy so im gunna also cut back on the light and feeding to 2 times a day..

thats what the pads look like

water out of the tap doesn't normally contain ammonia, it's chlorine, and what it will do is kill your good bacteria in the tank, so i would deff. start using a water conditioner, and the best thing would probably be to buy some poly filter pad to use, pretty cheat if you a few feet or order a small roll and cut it to size, or buy some poly pillow stuffing from walmart, works great.

Your water is probably cloudy because you're having bacteria blooms from the chlorine in the tap water killing off your beneficial bacteria.

Get yourself some water conditioner.

i will but id have to sneak to get it cause my granny dont want me useing chlorout or whatever well aquasafe is what i use but she thinks her way is better........ well she doesnt now JACK**** about fish! i bet if i asked her what the diff b/w tropical and neo-tropical she will just say there both tropical fish.. she lets the water sit over 24 hours b4 adding it in so the stuff in the tap water can evaperate..... these things dont just EVAPERATE but i guess i gotta do a water change with just 4 of my water from the store i got tomm.... distilled water or whatever its called/

would cotton stuff work that u can get from the petstore? dont remember the name but its in a clear bag and alota cotton comes with hmmmm

You need to find out what your tap water contains, chlorine or chloramine. Chlorine will gas off if aged and circulated. Chloramine will not.

The yellow/green scrubbies most likely have a label on them "not for aquarium use". This may be for one of two reasons...they will scratch the glass or be excessively abrasive to silicone, or contain detergents or mildew agents.

well its been a day already with the scrubbies and so far so good its cleared up a lil bit but not much. hasnt gotten worse yet.

the cotton stuff is probably poly-fil, i see bags of it in a lot of chain stores, should be fine if it is, and as far as the water conditioner, pick you up a bottle of prime, not sure on the size of the tank, but it will most likely take less than a capfull for each change and will be much better on your fish and your bacterial colony.

hmm i will anyways cause gma is gunna make me empty out my tank so i can clean the whole system :( well just hope my fish makes it threw if i get hit with the mini cycle! and i cant find prime so i just use aquasafe, cheaper anayways i bet. so wish me luck....
