Absolute DISASTER with neons

I saw some of the dead neon in the bag.. A very sad sight indeed. I picked up about a dozen of the otos and they are doing fine in my QT tank.

Yes, they all came from the same source, same shipment into a tank with only filters and some algae covered gravel (to help the otos which can be fragile).

Still all the otos and hatchets are fine. Most of the neons are dead.

Here is a picture of the tank to get an idea of how bare it is:

An idea of how the neons looked as they died, this is just one small fraction of the losses:

Very few if any of the dead fish had anything seemingly wrong with them.

Can I ask how/where have you obtain these neons and how many? I just saw the thread and pic. It seems you purchased lot more than the quantity that most hobbyist would buy at one time.

I dealt with so many tetras wether from farms in SE Asia, Florida or even from Wild.
i dont know if I have answers for you but If I may from my two decaades of handling transhipped fish, I would like to try assisting, that is if you wish..
LMK how you acclimated them and for how long. How did fish came in (box??).
What was the temp of water that they came in?
Were they already showing similar behaviors/symptoms?
Was the color of water green or blue?
Have you done any testing of water that they came in?

I import through a transhipping company in NYC. I did not purchase these for myself. There was an order that was on its way to Poland and 8000 fish had no place to go. I was one of several people who took in the fish that were in limbo. I don't even have the paperwork still over a week later. I am not sure their specific origins or what company they are from.

They were picked up from NYC in fish boxes. They had been re-oxygenated as they were delayed for a day by customs. The water was green/blue from the meds the transhipping company uses.

it was pretty cool. They got here (a friend who also took some in brought them to me) around 2am, so I didn't waste alot of time I just got them in the tank. They had been sitting for over a day at customs.

They seemed perfect. Brightlly colored, schoaling well, and eating me out of house and home for 5 days. Then went belly up en masse, about 500 the first hour, the rest over the next few hours.

I did not test the water. I just got them out of it and into the tank. The tank has shown no signs of any cycling issues as I used a well established filter and put in teh algae gravel (to help the otos which I had heard could be difficult to supplement initially). I fed live teh first two days (bbs and microworms). I then added flake and golden pearls into the mix.I did daily water changes and cleaned out any uneaten food. The tank has been kept pristine. We did plop and drop acclimation as they were stressed and it was very late. The water was very cloudy that they came in and we were very worried about adding my hard water to the contaminated/ammonia water as the toxicity of ammonia and nitrite goes up as the hardness increases. This was not ideal, but was the best way to prevent further ammonia burn.

What is most confusing to me is that they died on day 5. I coul dhave understood it happening more in the first couple days. I have imported other fish (not in this volume) and have not had any problems. Just last week I got in habrosus cories and erythromicron rasboras, very very few losses.

When you get in fish, do you treat for any parasites? What would you recommend me doing now for the remaining fish (hatchets, otos, and some other pencilfish and tetras that came in as contaminants). They seem the same, but I am unsure of what to do. This whole experience has me so nervous I am dreaming about these **** fish at night.

All advice is welcome!!

Are you absolutely positive their deaths weren't O2 related?

i have an xp3 and 2 big sponge filters, i guess it could have been, but I really don't see how the other fish wouldn't have been effected to, especially the other contaminant tetras.

And why 5 days in?

I don't know what to tell you. You may be smart to hold off selling anything in that tank until you can figure out what the cause was or everything in the tank is stable for a period of time.

Msj, do you have a microscope and can you do a little autopsy?
Did we r/o neon tetra disease. You mentioned you fed live foods and some live foods can harbor the evil parasites. Some get lumpy cycts in their muscles under the skin.
I totally empathize with the husband getting upset with the crying over lossed fish. He may feel overwhelmed with your emotion and stress and not know what to do about it.
Sorry, good luck with the rest.

live foods were raised by me, but I guess its possible. No commercially bought foods were fed. I will see if my buddy can lend me his microscope and see if I can do some smears.
