What would be the best procedure when buying new coral. (Quarentine, fresh water dips, etc) How long ?

I have a 55 reef with a 10 gal quarantine tanks established. Been in saltwater for almost 10 years but just breaking into the coral end of it. Thanks for the help.

The info was good but it's kinda vague. Just looking for csome suggestions on how long this should be done, freshwater dips, quarantine, etc. Anyone have any proven suggestions ?

I would only recommend freshwater dips on zoanthids to get rid of nudibranchs... still, I prefer other methods to dip that don't require freshwater. How I do it for all corals is first do a dip with Revive as per instructions on the bottle, followed by a dip in MediCoral per instructions. For Acroporas I do one more step and dip in a Interceptor per this websites instructions. Interceptor is a prescription though and a vet must prescribe it. Takes a little time to find one and you have to have good documentation on why you need it, like pictures of your tank, macro pictures of the problem, and documentation like the link above to show how it will be used and why it is needed for an aquarium. Most "Exotic Pet" vets seem to know more and don't give you a hassle when you ask for it vs normal vets.

Oh ya, forgot to mention, interceptor is kind of a extreme step. I only started putting that on my list of "Coral QT steps" recently because a fellow reefer tore down his tank and a bunch of locals bought corals that were infested with red bugs and acro eating flatworms. One person is still battling them with his corals all in QT over a month later. I got lucky and only got one small piece of monti from him and I dipped that in Medicoral first. Since seeing the problems fellow reefers are going through, I started doing the revive dip as well. So far I haven't got any new acros lately to do the interceptor dip, but I will one every acro from now on.

I got another new monti from another reefer and did the 2 dips and saw quite a bit of stuff come off. Tiny, not real sure what it was, but glad I dipped anyway just to make sure. Monti opened up and was fine in the DT after that within an hour. No negative effects from the dips.

wow apparently i do that wrong, i just set a vac up and drip my tank water into (1 drop a second the bag) for about 3 hours.. WOOPS.. well beginners mistake, nothings gone wrong though so far

Ya, for the longest time I didn't do much more than that either and never had any major problems. In the last few years though it seems these pests are getting in more places and spreading more. Just seeing a fellow reefer have to go through this huge pain just because he didn't dip first hit a little too close to home and I learned this lesson through him. It is so easy to dip and takes less than 30 minutes and it really helps out a ton.

im gonna start dipping!

So, what should the dip steps be and with what? I don't want any critters showing up in my tank. I've got a snail infestation in my small frag tank and would hate to move them over.

Thanks ACE !! That was the kindd of info I was looking for. I'm not new to saltwater but I know the reef side of it's a different animal. I'm looking to get this all set up correctly and possibly avoid some situation. With what I have paid my local vet for my dog I am sure i shouldn't have much of an issue getting it. I'd say he owes me a few ! Unfortinatly My fish are all in isolation for the next few months due to a nasty isopod. I would like to aviod issues like this in the future
