I've been on a shopping trip this afternoon with my DH & daughter looking for Christmas present ideas & ended up in a big garden centre a few towns away. Of course the pram got pushed in the general direction of the aquarium bit to buy a new background pic for the tank. My hubby looked at the tropical section (he fantasises about being a great fishkeeper lol) while I stayed in the coldwater/goldfish section with my daughter... & lo & behold - there were dead fish galore!! :mad2:I can only describe the tanks/vats as, is a 'market of diseased carrots'. There were fish piled upon fish & they looked like carrots that had gone off! The tanks were so full! The poor live ones must have felt like they were living in a coffin... There was also a tank of black/orange moors who had all seen better days too, they were belly up, colourless & staring blankly to the skies. There were tiny koi carp too which looked lovely till you looked carefully & saw the ulcers & flesh missing! Its the 1st time i've seen chunks missing out of a fish in real life..
My daughter (who is 3) kept saying 'Aww poor dead fishes' & it was awful.. I have no idea what could have happened to them all.. maybe someone put something in the water (they were open tanks) & poisoned them? I told one of the assistants who came & sort of peered in, then went away again with a flustered look on her face.. You'd think a company trying to sell fish to the general public would be a bit more vigilant in disposing of such a huge amount of fish before people like me saw them..
The stupid thing was.. its the ONLY fish store i've seen with New Tank Syndrome warnings on every tank. They were quizzing customers about how many other fish they had etc & were vigilant about important things.. but still had more floaters than live ones
Anyway, sorry for the mini rant & just had to tell you guys & get it off my chest...

Sound like a Wal Mart Fish section to me! I hope there is a fishy heaven for all the poor fishies that get such bad treatment!!

No  We don't have WalMart yet in the UK. The chain of supermarkets called Asda is being taken over by WalMart but they don't yet have a fish department.... apart from the ones you eat!

It was a local garden centre I was shopping in.. lovely place for Christmas decos & plants but baaaad for fish!! I was gonna take my camera with me to get some nice pics of us as a family out & about but forgot it! I so wish i'd taken it just for the evidence...

Needless to say, you didn't get any new fish today.... right?

It's amazing to me that stores will take such poor care of their merchandise. If you had been looking at lamps, I bet you wouldn't find a shelf full of broken ones. They would remove them promptly.

I went to a new LFS today too. I didn't even know it was there. And I will probably forget in the near future.

In the front was saltwater, which didn't look bad. There were also a few Silver Aro's... sorry, but when I look at them, I simply don't see $39.95 They do nothing for me.

Then I worked my way farther back.. They had freshwater fish, if you took the time to look through the murky water to see them. Their tanks screamed "Quarantine!". The tattooed fish and the land turtle straining to keep his head above water was the icing on the cake. I was going to just walk out, but they had the bad enough judgment to thank me for coming, and said I should come again.... If only they hadn't done that.... LOL

Oh well, I won't be back, and they know why. So does everybody else that was in the store - it's a small place, everyone was in earshot.... :)

When having livestock like that you really need to have people going around constently pulling deads because it really is a bad advertising for the store. Some death is expected but wow that soo screamed of walmart it was scarry.
And your saying that walmart is taking over this garden place?? unfortunitly it won't be an upgrade.

its horrible, you wouldnt believe. i went there and all the bettas were belly-up in their little 1/2 a cup water container, goldfish with ich, and what i hate is they try to have variety, and have like red danios and gold gouramis, and what the heck?!?! no one even buys fish there so i dont know why they are still selling them!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:O makes me VERY mad.

Do you think that some people have a phobia about putting thier hands in the water? I know that if I put my hands in one of my tanks when one of my sisters is around, she freaks. I know that these people work there and sometimes thier hands are tied because of management, but it just does not make sense that so many of these shops have so many fish that they do not remove from the tanks.
