adding new sand?

I suppose as a last resort, beach sand could be used but it would have to be boiled well to ensure its well cleaned....Its just a personal preference of mine not to use it at all...

i'm not sure if my zip code carried over on my url post... sorry about that. my zip code is 96815. the shipping is over $200. ha

what if i go off shore a little ways... there is a dive spot that i go to sometimes that is off the traveled path. water depth is about 50ft and i could collect sand there.... would that be ok or would it still be polluted?

and what about rock? could i just scoop up some loose pieces and thow them in my tank as well.? if i keep them submerged in seawater is there a need to cure it?

good question about the LR, my parents are in RI, can they get me some LR outta there, prob not couse it is polluted right?,
thanks,
Shane

Its up to you at the end of the day..Obviously nobody can say for sure what the contents of the sand is going to be...

I would check on the laws where you live before taking rock from the ocean. Its illegal in many countries...

If I were you, I'd just get a few bags of sand from Home Depot. I built my DSB with play sand from Lowe's, and haven't noticed any problems. I didn't even rinse the stuff because I didn't want to lose the fine grains. I just couldn't afford the live sand (I'm not sure how much it helps anyway, the play sand fills with bacteria just the same), and this has worked out great. Much, much cheaper.
