hi all
hope someone may be able to help me. i have 2 ADF's and a blue gormi in a small 5 gal tank and in a 50 gal tank i have 3 angels, 1 pleco, and 1 sailfin. my 3 year old wants a gold fish. would the ADF's and gormi be safe with the others in my 50 gal??? i am thinking of moving them over and giving her the 5 gal if they will get along.

a 5g tank will, sooner, rather than later, be too small for a goldfish. They're massive poop producers, and in good conditions grow very big very quickly.

The ADFs will do ok, in terms of not getting eaten (I think), but in a 50g tank, it'll be hard for them to get enough food, or be target fed.

Is there any other fish your daughter might like? In a 5g, a betta, a small school of tetras, pygmy cories, otocinclus, ADFs would all be good for a small tank, though not all at the same time :)

yes, sounds safe to me. check out the dwarf frog sticky in the main freshwater forum on top of the all the other posts. edit- ooooh i didnt see that about the goldfish. NOT GOOD!!! maybe for a pond or huge(100+g. as goldfish grow huge) coldwater setup. perhaps you could get her a pair or trio of otos (small extremely cute suckerfish).

I am not sure but I wouldn't recommend putting a goldfish in a 5 gallon tank. They need one much larger as they grow very big and produce a lot of waste.

What kind of set-up does my frog require?

The best set-ups will be between 5 gallons and 29 gallons. The reason for these numbers is that 5 gallons of water is much easier to maintain than a smaller amount. If one can be very conscientious about water quality and sustaining consistent water parameters, a tank of 2.5 gallons would be acceptable for a frog or two. Tanks that are larger than 29 gallons can make finding your frog difficult since they do like to hide out, and because of ADF’s eating habits, they can be difficult to feed in larger tanks which can lead to starvation. It is therefore highly recommended that these frogs be kept in a tank no larger than 29 gallons.

ummm ok i remember having goldfish as a kid but only remember them being about 2 inches long... how big will they get?

(feeling a bit out of it now ) :o

Around 7 inches long I think. The reason they may not have gotten large in your tanks is beacus being in a small tank stunts their growth and they will die from living in their own waste in a tank that small.

i have heard if many ADFs living in larger community set ups. my old ones used to love shrimp pellets, sinking broken wafer bits, cichlid pellets, they would swim up to grab clumps of bloodworm, fight amongst themselves for earthworms and that type of thing. I never had them in anything larger than a 29, but I have heard of them being in large set ups and living full lives.

Golfish are coldwater fish, your gourami and adf's are not. They are tropical. Mixing goldfish and tropical fish is a no no for several reasons, briefly including the temp. requirements, food requirements, ammonia levels and goldfish are vectors for tropical fish diseases.

A full grown goldfish can be huge and can eat ADF's.

To ensure their proper weight and nutrition, ADF's are best suited towards small tanks and target feedings.
