Advice on T5 Bulbs

Ok. Well, I have added many more plants now and dose flourish and flourish excel. I have expanded the lighting period to 10 hours total with a 3 hour peak using all four bulbs. Everything is going great. Algae is under control and my sword has sent out a runner after only a week. Evrything growing crazy fast.

Sounds like everything is going well. :)

that's fantastic news, james. :D

Thanks all. I really did appreciate the help and opinions. I just wanted to make sure I updated this thread so that if someone found it, they would realize that you can use a 4X54 light fixture,a 90 gallon tank, no co2 injection (although using excel) and not have problems with algae. However, if I didn't do regular water changes or didn't dose with excel, I doubt I would be able to get away with the light schedule I am currently on.

basically... myth busted. :y220e:

now it's time to start testing out carpets. :nilly:

OK. I will get some pics up soon. It is still very much a work in progress. I would like to go with a fully planted tank, but my wife likes the silly aquarium decorations.

I dose a low amount of excel, just 5ml/day. I may increase that amount as the plants increase in the tank. I'll be buying a 4 liter bottle soon, which should last a VERY long time. Otherwise, I dose about 6ml of flourish twice a week. I do weekly 25% water changes. The only other additives I add to the water are prime and a blackwater extract during water changes.

The light is sitting directly on my tank using the little rubber feet. There is a glass cover on the tank. The cover stay pretty clean and I haven't had any algae build up on it at all. I would have used the legs to get the light up higher, but then my canopy wouldn't fit on the tank and my wife didn't like how it looked.

Below are pictures of the front and back of the aquarium. I put the aquarium in the middle of my living room, so it had to have an unobstructed view from both sides. It was quite a challenge, but it is a lot of fun to be able to see the aquarium from all sides.
