Why not just a betta and a 7 pack of celestial danios? somewhat exotic but simple.

Although an AC40 would be a bit much, maybe a 20.

I think this is your best bet of seeing cichlid-like behavior in a 10 gallon tank. You could have a number of scarlet badis. I think Badis badis could work also.

well since im obsessed with bettas now i think ill be doing a betta sorority with 3 bettas and some grenn or diamonhead neon tetras (to help distract them of course. the tank will have lots of plants and hiding places.

skip the tetras, that's gonna overstock it. Make sure that you get all FEMALE bettas for the sorrority, and make plenty of territories.

you could do some badis. i think those are related to cichlids.
