I have had a pair of rams in my tank and they have been doing good and I love them so I bought another the other day and the two that have been in there chase it around like crazy. I had a male and female and I think this new one is a male but its a tiny guy so I cant really tell.

Thats not uncommon for an established pair, what size is the tank? Your probably gonna have to remove the new comer to his own tank, or take him back to the LFS, or end up with a dead ram because of the other two.

currently they are in a 36g but are being moved into a 75g. I think I'll take it back. Would it have been better if it had been about the same size?

Nope, established pairs can have quite large territories and won't tollerate new comers for the most part. Most of the time the only way you can keep rams in groups, is by having 6 or more and having them together before they started pairing off.

thanks... thats a major bummer... I wanted to have a large group of them really bad, but when i bought the pair they were brought in from a previous owner who had them for a long time. Do you have tips for trying to breed these fish? thanks... man do you ever know your fish

Rams aren't picky about spawning. Once they settle in they will start to spawn. Feed them good, a varied diet with frozen/live foods as well as a good staple food is best. Frequent water changes, two 50% changes a week won't hurt at all, clean water is a really good start. Be sure you have a male and female too. If you can post a picture of them I can probably sex them for you. I've never had any probs getting my rams to spawn, once they pair up they will lay eggs about every 8 days.

I cant post a pic. But I'll describe them. The "male" is bigger and has a solid black spot and the "female" has red breast and speckles in her black spot and a little more black around the eye region, she also is the one that is a little more aggresive

Just wanted to add that patience is definitely a virtue with these guys. They tend to take longer to reach breeding age than most other dwarf cichlids.

I have 13 week old german blue ram fry who are already pairing off and exibiting some spawning type behavior..... (YIKES!!) I have a 15 gallon with about 40 juvies and a 10 gallon with about 10 or so. They range in size from about 1-1 1/2 inches in length.

Gotta find some homes for these little jewels before too long......
