I have a small wager with a friend and we would like some help. we are just haveing an arguement about what is the most aggressive fish (freshwater). We would apresiate any response, and opinion. if possible give some references.

So many choices! Jack Dempseys always seem to be idiots, Red Devils, Red Tailed Cat for sheer "I can eat that" attitude, Gar, Green Terror. Depends on the size you want to work with and the individuals. We have a Red Devil that was unmanageable for two people so far and he is only half grown. A 10 inch Green Terror that was a monster and now in his own large tank; he did not play well with others. To me it isn't what fish is aggressive so much as which isn't.

Thats really up for debate and hard to say for sure as it really depends on the individual fish in it's particular surroundings. All in all, however, the most aggressive species of fishes include the larger guapote cichlids(Dovii, Managuense) as well as the Umbi(Caquetia unbriferum). Cichlids in general are the most aggressive family of fish.

i'd say wolfish, snakehead, black rhom, sabertooth tetra ...they'll pretty much eat anything in the tank with them

thank you all for the information, but unfortunately these are not the answers that i was looking for. I guess that i should have clarified that i was looking for information on fish in their natural habitat, not nescessariluy in an aquarium. and please give some references. thank you again for any help.

Do a google search on all the fishes listed if you want references.

most aggressive in natural habitat

My friend, all of the answers you received are valid based on the fact that fish do not "decide" to become aggressive when they "realize" they are in an aquarium. the aggressiveness of a fish is built into the fish's genetic code. if it's aggressive in an aquarium that's because it is an aggressive fish by its God-given design. but if you need non-aquaria fish, then the grand daddy of em all is the Great White Shark! and if you need references, you're not from this planet :shark:
