Aggro Yo Yo Loach.

Yo-Yos Aggressive?

Are yo-yo loaches usually aggressive? The reason I'm asking is because I have been thinking about getting some, but I think I will have to get another tank set up as my current tank is already getting near maxed out. Right now I have a 29g set up and I have 2 black skirt tetras, a bala shark, pleco, 2 adult mollies, 2 baby mollies and fixing to have some more babies this week. I'm also fixing to add 2 angel fish to the tank. Im not keeping the fry as for my shark will eat them and I don't have the room for them.

Yoyos aren't really aggressive but they do tend to harass other tankmates if kept singly or in pair as they have no other companions to pester around. Your 29g is actually overstocked. The bala shark needs to be removed from the tank considering it grows to 14 inches when full-grown.

Yoyos will also nip the angelfish's fins so you can't really pull off the mix unless the tank has a spacious area. Yoyos grow to 6 inches maximum therefore they require plenty of space. I'd recommend a 4ft tank for a group of yoyos.

Hmm...I guess I didn't know that the shark can get up to 14 inches. I always thought like 7 inches or so. Well, for right now it will be ok. By the time it gets that big I will probably have a bigger tank set up and ready to go. It's only about 2.5-3 inches right now.

You'll never know the growth rate as it is dependent on how you maintain your tank. Better not assume when they will reach the size you are expecting them to. It is always important to prepare a larger tank while the fish is growing.

Do all clown (yo yo ) loches eat snails ???
I have 5 Clown loaches ( approx 2 to 3.5 inches) and thousands of snails ? ( 6 foot tank )
I have no idea what kind of snails they are but I really dont want this many !
The loaches are very active both day and night doing their yo yo thing, hangging out playing, eating and having a good time. But I have never seen any of them show any interest in the snails ever. ??
When people have a snail problem the answer is normally get a clown.
Well I got clowns and snails ??
Any ideas ?

:welcome: to AC!

Clown loaches and Yoyo loaches are two different species. Clowns grow HUGE, Yoyos max out at 6". Both need to be in groups of 4 minimum since they are social. Both will eat snails, but snails are best removed manually and by correcting the cause of over-population which is usually over-feeding &/or inadequate gravel vacuuming.

I agree with HN.

And welcome !!!

Mick, try not feeding for a day or 2 then see how they like snails. Then, if that doesn't work, try crushing a couple snails against the glass to give the loaches the idea.
