Airstones!

thats great granny

thank you :)
I just wish someone would pull me off here and I would not have the urge to buy more and more stuff. I can not afford any more :wall: all I want to do is buy tanks and fish, but the pet store here sucks bad, and the fish there die off by the time you get them home. I have to go 110 miles away to get them, and i have to order all my suplies at home. :wall: oh andI do water changes every sunday, and I hate doing them, more tanks means more cleaning :lipssealedsmilie: I have no more room for them, so why why why do I have the urge to buy more more more ???
I spend more time in the wanted ads here, and I can not buy anything because the temps are below zero. I hate this town, its cold and I want o buy fish and plants ...... ok, now I want to buy again, OMG please someone slap me !!!

yup im the same way. im consumed now with gettin what have working perfect since im outta money and room aswell.

I use no airstones at all in any of my tanks and I've set up the return on my canister in my 75g so there is no surface agitation at all. I inject CO2 into that tank and I want to limit loss at the surface as much as possible. I've had no problems at all with the health of any of the fish.

K, Jeffrey on my lunch break I ran home and moved the co2 airstone (plastic). This is my 10g with the ghost hair film fungis stuff. So thats why I went plastic. I put it in the opposite corner of the HOB. Its under a ledge in my rock hidy hut for my passed on crayfish. It bubbles then hits the slate runs up it a bit to another then up to the surface. takes like 2-3 seconds for a bubble to be on the rise to freedom. The film fungus looks like its coming back from this morning. I just took the wooden one out this morn when I noticed a silver dollar sized patch on the gravel and the glass was gettin hazy. I spot vac'd the patch and left the glass. The gravel checked ok at lunch and the glass seems a bit more hazy. Ill do a 80% wc when I get home. I cant tell now if its from this mornings gravel patch or the co2 going in.

If I were to shake it and the lil drops that get to the top go into the line and maybe into the tank is that going to make a diff?

I didnt think so bc my 5g is ok?

I removed the plastic airstone covered in the film. I added a powerhead/filter and hooked the airline "naked" to the side of the filter intake and blows out alotta tiny bubbles and the film seems to be going away. and I added some more plants too.

One benefit of running an airstone is that it breaks up the slimy scum layer that can form on the water surface. The slime layer can inhibit gas exchange at the surface so in my mind anything that can break up the scum is a good thing.

In my experience, that slimy scum layer that forms at the top is a sign of too little filtration, too much food, or that it's past time for a water change.

Additionally, most flake foods give off an oil that stays at the top for a little bit after feeding. In this case it's nothing to worry about.

wow I have never seen a water slime in my tanks, ewwwwwwww

I have an airstone across the back of the tank and my loaches and gouramis love to play in the bubbles. I have used Melafix and Pima fix a few times to help with Fin Rot a long while back. The melafix and pimafix can cause so many bubbles on the top that it impedes gas exchange. The airstone along with my canister and HOB have eliminated this problem all together. Plus it looks good.
