Anyone have any good or bad reviews on this filter (Left in pic)? Looks like a monster with a footprint that is finally bigger then the magnum and for $100 and free shipping seems like a great deal, maybe too great.

never heard of it and getting replacment parts could be a real nightmare. looks like thin cheap plastic pieces. i wouldnt spend 100.00 for it

I am testing the catalina canister with good results. and I have not heard of it either.

A couple of things:
Testing a filter, imo, means determining how well it works over years. Eheims are considered to be the best for a number of reasons, most notably is how well they work for decades. There is now way to do this for a brand new product.
This is flat out incorrect. In general, media volume is much more critical in filtration than flow rate.

I see now that the GPH was in the Subject Line. I haven't trained myself to check that part yet.
so with a guesstimation of possible 250 gph out of a slightly dirty magnum, compared to maybe 500 out of this new one. That makes it twice as effective.

Lets say were talking soley about bio-filtration. Sense thats what most people(not I) use canisters for.
For your comment to be correct. The 350 would have to be allowing ammonia/nitrite to pass all the way through. And being re-introduced into the tank.
I don't have any information or self testing to go with the idea, that filters do or do not biologically filter everything comming through.
I guess on a given tank with a given bio-load, you'd be correct in saying that what I said is flat out incorrect.
While on the subject. Do you have somewhere that you can't point me to, to read about efficency of media.
I've never had any problems with, not enough filtration. And would find articals on this good reading.

But I've used(tested, if you will) some HOB's that, with in a few months. That I can give some major thumbs down too.

I just thought it looked like such a monster in the comparison photo that you all would get a kick out of it so I just had to post it, especially for the ridiculously low price and high GPH claim. I also never seen a canister with its own set of airport luggage wheels lol.
For me the two most important aspects of any water filter is its GPH minimum matched rate for volume of water about 3 GPH to 1 gallon, and the filter media's surface area. A well designed filter can have high surface area with relatively low filter volume, but a filter design that has high media volume but low surface area is a poorly designed filter IMO. This filter looks like it has about the same surface are as the Magnum 350 so I was interested in the larger volume, but like most of you pointed out who wants to risk a Ben Franklin on an unknown filter system.

Did you come across this canister when you were sorting through the hundreds of "sunsun" canisters? That's how I came across it. I'm most likely going to be purchasing the Perfect aka Sunsun 303b (with the 9w UV).
