Algae Eaters? Please help!

a shoal of panda cories?
and I have to agree with excuzzzeme:
How often do you feed the pleco's if you are feeding them???

No. :eek3:

1. Panda Cories are not coldwater fish.
2. They don't eat algae.

any fish that you get to help maintain your tank you need to research thoroughly, many plecos are much happier at warmer temps anyway, my high fin was in a cold water environment and did nothing until i had him and gave him a heater. Now he never stops sucking the glass.

i heard that plecos tend to suck on the sides of goldfish, so alot of stores say.

i saw in petsmart a brush with a long handle so you could scrape the glass clean without getting your hands wet.

maybe that would work.

never heard that one before, CAE's yes i have heard but not plecos. Although i have got a pleco that does like the odd guppy snack. he takes one when he fancies a snack.

no more plecos. reduce light, reduce feeding, increase water changes. if the algae cannot be controlled through those factors, reduce bioload itself. from what i can tell, you seem to have 6 young goldies in a 29g tank, with a mixture of long-bodied and round-bodied fish. i hope you have a plan for them as they grow - a plan which also includes separation of the two types.

I've cut down the feeding to about 2-3 times a week and am giving each fish only 1-2 sinking mini sticks, which seems to have significantly cut down on waste. I do 20% water change weekly. I try to keep the light on around 8 hours a day. We no longer have 6 goldies, but 5. The smallest telescope eye goldie died. His eyes were too big and he could never get food, I'm guessing. I'm still trying to convince my fiance that the tank is over stocked, but she's too bull-headed.

I do have algae wafers that I try feeding the plecos but the last pleco I had wasn't interested. I don't think he was any good to begin with as he only lasted 1 1/2 weeks. Previous members lasted 2-3 months. I'm guessing that I should just forget the algae eater idea?

yes deffinately, if you continue doing what you are doing it should cut down the problem for you. You could always increase your wc volume if needs be, i generally do 25% weekly on each of my tanks, and make sure you do a good gravel vac everytime you do.

I had a common pleco that started sucking the slime coat off of one of my fatty goldfish and he had to find a new home asap. It caused like a hickey on the side of my ryukin.

interesting, one to bear in mind when selecting the type of pleco by the sounds of it.

You can get a small pool for the goldfish. Cheap and effective, if a little round.

Lol, ugh :lol2:
