Algae Eaters? Please help!

Wow - I never knew this about goldfish. Great info The V

A few months ago I was in the same boat or tank as it seems when I plunked a two goldfish from Wal-Mart in a tank at the office and had no idea they would grow to 10 inches. But I'm learning and the guy are totally worth investing the time and cash into being a major part of the house. A lot can be learned here in a short time.

So after reading all your replies and doing some research, it sounds like the only thing I can do to control this algae is to keep it scrubbed off the sides of the tank and maintain 50% water changes for a while to see if that helps. Does any one think the mag-float or java ferns will help reduce the overall problem since cleaning the rocks is some what difficult? By the way, I'm looking in to what to do about this overstocking problem I have... Thanks!

The plants will help. They feed on the same stuff the algae does so it gives the algae less to work with and as a plus it add oxgen to the tank which is good for your fish. Just make sure you really check the names of the plants before buying to make sure they aquatic. I have one Java Fern and several anubias nana in my tank and it helped with algae as in I almost don't see any of it anymore:) Plants make a good clean up crew and they can work into a new tank if you plan to go larger.

yeah, don't feel bad, we're not coming down on you. after a childhood of winning goldfish at the fair and keeping them in a bowl for two weeks until they died (or i accidentally dropped them down the sink while *carefully" draining the bowl with them still in it and refilling with cold water right from the tap.... well, what i'm saying is we all start at the beginning. we just try to help new people skip over all the stupid mistakes we've already made.

Java Fern will definitely help. It anchors to rocks and Goldfish don't seem to rip it up like they do finer leaved plants.
