algae gel food mix reviews & discussion

In my opinion about the instructions...

I make DIY foods, and one thing I am gonig to do with my batch is, mix the "mix" with one TBSP cool water of appropriate proportions, and slowly stir in the cool mix into the 3 TBSP boiling water while stiring constantly. I will then bring the entire mix to a low temp boil and stir for a few minutes. Once i have a consistent dissolved consistency, i will turn off stove and package into a container of my choice (like a beverage lid or pasted on a rock...) I have noticed that if you add a cool mix to boiling water you get a better "set".

I will try it soon and let you know my results using this method of preparation.

Whew! Way too complicated for me to handle. :p: Do let us know how it goes! Will it be difficult to boil such small quantities on the stove? Do you have a tiny sauce pan or something?

I just made your mix! (I'm home sick from work today with a cold, so it was a perfect time to try it.) I'll tell you what I did...

I had some watercress, so I blended that into the blender to make a sort of almost juice like puree. I added a beaten egg, a few drops of Vita Sol (multivitamins for birds, which are safe for fish as well) and a little water.

I waited 30 seconds. Whisking it cold, it was a little chunky and seemed like it was already slightly setting. I ended up with a cup of mixture and nuked it for 1 minute and 30 seconds, this caused it to boil for about 20 seconds I believe.

I've poured it onto a cake pan and am now waiting for it to set. I like how unlike gelatin, it doesn't make huge glue like lumps. And I have to say that for the first time ever, making fish food made ME hungry! Usually I am so grossed out by the food I make them, the best I can hope for is just to be neutral (like when using carrot puree in baby food jars) but this actually smelled great - I guess because I used the egg and watercress, it smelled like I was cooking a super healthy omelette or vegetable souffle :D

Anyway, can't wait until it's done and I can give you the taste test results!

I can't wait! I'm really curious to hear how it does with such a high volume of other ingredients. There may not be enough agar to hold it together, though I suppose the egg would help some.

well I just made some of mine. I didnt do it right. I thought I followed the directions, but something did not work. Almost as soon as I put a small portion of the gel into the tank it started to dissolve. Maybe I didnt let it stay heated for long enough when making it. I boiled water and added the water (4 parts to 1 part mix) to the mix. I didnt boil them together. I was using a small amount of mix. Maybe that is what I did wrong. I still have more to try again. Maybe next time I will do it better

Got it in the other day. Just made it up. Hopefully I did it good enough.

I boiled some water to ~ 200. Added the 1 tbsp powder to a small jar. Added 4 tbsp of the boiled water and stirred well. It got to the consistancy of paste.

I took that and trying (3) different methods:

1) Milk cap buttons. Poured in (3) caps and leveled off.
2) Spread on (2) tile pieces. Spread it like butter on bread.
3) Using Saran wrap, I took the remaining mixture and spread it out on there to make a free strip.

Wonder how long it takes to set up or be tank ready?

It seems that a lot of people are boiling the water, and then mixing in the powder. I have never done it that way, and I suspect that it may cause problems with setting. Agar requires higher temperatures than gelatin to work, so I think the water may be cooling too much before it is mixed with the agar.

Just gotta wait until it's cool and rubbery to the touch. If you put it in the tank before it's set, it will fall apart.

That was actually going to be my next question. I just checked on it and when I touched it, some came off on my finger.

Hmmmm....don't think I did a good job with it.

The reason I did it that way was the small quantity.

When you make your batches, how much do you use at one time? Hope I didn't duff on it. My apologies if I didn't you justice. We'll see. I may even place in the fridge for a few minutes as well.

How bout another question....

If it's not quite right, can it be re-heated? Maybe add a skosh of water?
