I have 2 mystery (i believe apple) snails in my 55 gallon, they both have green algae on their shells i was wondering if this was removable. It bothers me, but if the snail purposely has it there i won't bother it. If i can though, how do i safely and thoroughly remove it?

tooth brush?????

^ expected that :D, and i have tried, but it doesn't all come off. I guess i little bit of pressure won't hurt much :/

Put one on top of the other and they will clean each other.

dont crack their shells!!

good luck!!!

Unless the algae is hurting them somehow, which I don't see how it could.
You could just leave it alone and improve your water conditions.
Not trying to nag or anything. My snails are covered in algae.
Can't afford to upgrade yet : /

Apple snails aren't effective algae eaters. They will eat soft green algae but not hard green algae or the hair algae. Nerites and bristlenose plecos are often mixed with them to help clean their shells. I have both in my tank and none of my diffusas have it on their shells.

I have a couple of gold Apple snails with hair algae growing on their backs. And they're in a tank with 5 SAE too, but they must spook the fish to not recieve the grooming treatment, haha.
