I agree, I will make sure to add more circulation, make sure the skimmer is up. And what? Stick a damsel in there and try again?

I would stay away from the Damsels of any kind. Unless you don't want any other kind of fishes. When they are small all is well, once they reach adult size they will become very aggressive and can stress other fish to death. And yes they can a do kill fish larger than themselves.
Maybe a few Chromis or other small less expensive types to "test the waters".
