Amazontanklvr's tank build/blog

What are the 14g cube dimensions? 15″ x 15.5″ x 14″? What would you be keeping in it?

A 20g tall is 24″ x 12″ x 16″. Both are fairly tall tanks for a smaller footprint. Take the footprint only. You lose 9" in length and gain 3.5" in width front to back. When i'm dealing with smaller tanks, I look at the footprint. But also what type of fish i'm keeping. For ex I use tall tanks to grow out my angels. But for most fish, they will use the horizontal space, so a 15 x 15" tank is like 2 x 5.5g tanks side by side for width. So I would stock fish that are good for 10 gallons in the 14g cube.

The biggest problem with tall column style tanks for me is they don't offer a ton of surface gas exchange. So I must keep an airstone or sponge filter to circulate water from low to high and also hopefully help with o2 levels at the bottom for say lower strata fish. Also it limits how many fish that use horizontal space you can keep. At the same time, it offers more room for 2 different strata fish.

But when you really think about it, there's not much difference between a 20g tall and 14g cube really. I mean I would stock similar fish anyway. Purely my 2 cents and probably more thought than you want lol.
Uh, 15" cubed I think.

yes. Uh. A qt for my kerris and a breeding/grow out for my nannacara. I may get a 10 gal for a spawning tank and use the 20h (if I get it) as a grow out.

I see that.

hhm. Ok. I think i'll try the 2 high first. (it's also closer to my house)

Next to what Angelcraze said there is also the issue of lighting you need more/better unless you just do floating plants. Most importantly they're terrible for maintenance, especially when you get older. I have several of them but would never buy one again.

All my tanks (except for the 5g and 20g) are at least 16" deep. My 120g is 26" deep. I did notice it takes more lighting for the 120g and 90g at 24", but 16-20" is fairly standard for my tanks. I use the 10W LED bulbs or more intensive LED lighting fixtures like Finnex 24/7 or BW DA series. Some lighting systems are too dim for 18" tanks like Loach mentioned, but the brighter LED fixtures (or a couple 10w standard LEDs) work well in deeper planted tanks as long as the plants you are trying to grow are good for your tank and low/med light.

Ok so after 4 days of being in the mail my kerris and plants came. And they were all alive!!!!
Anyway i put the kerris in a breeder box at the moment because some of the are tiny
And then guess what i found in my tank this morning? Duckweed! sigh i removed what little i found. Any ideas to completely get rid of it?

To get rid of duckweed you have to remove every single one of them manually. The difficulty is in the hood of your tank. If you can take it off and have good access to the surface scoop everything out with a net. When you can't and have to drain water, there is always some duckweed that will stick to the glass, heater, plants, whatever, and you have to keep repeating it until it is all gone.

You can invest in a surface skimmer.
Thanks for the idea but I'm not going to buy anything ATM. :) I already spent quite a bit on the plants and kerris and am thinking of getting some easy green and more food so....
lol

Well it's currently open top. I remover what little bits I found with tweezers.
thanks for the ideas.

And now reading this i remembered. I need to get a glass top for this still - AND lid clips as the top is rimless. sigh

My offer still stands. Send me photos of your duck weed. Just looking at it, ill kill it off :P
